HOLIDAYS TO FAR OFF PLACES OR EXOTIC LOCATIONS ARE BECOMING MORE POPULAR. DESCRIBE THE REASONS FOR GROWTH OF SUCH HOLIDAYS AND USING THE EXAMPLE OF A LESS ECONOMICAL DEVELOPED COUNTRY, OUTLINE THE PHYSICAL, CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF THE GROWTH OF TOURISM AND SUGGEST WHAT COULD BE DONE TO LIMIT THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF INCREASING TOURISM AND ENSURE THAT SUCH GROWTH IS SUSTAINABLE IN SUCH PLACES.

Introduction

This piece of coursework is based on the tourism industry in less economically developed countries (L.E.D.C). I am going to explain why many exotic holiday destinations are becoming more and more popular with tourists and what effects are occurring to the culture of that land. I will use Kenya as my case study to demonstrate these effects.

People in general are going on more holidays because overall people are wealthier and can afford to go. Tourism has increased because the average monthly manual wage in 2002 is 50 times more of that in 1950. In 1950 it was £23.28 and now it is £1,203.40 the reason for such a big increase is because of inflation.

AVERAGE WEEKLY WAGE

2001

There is much more leisure time available this is because of the shorter working hours. People have longer holidays which can be booked at any time during the year. Most employers give their employees 4 weeks paid holidays, which gives them an opportunity to go further for their holidays.

Improved transport is available and airfare has decreased to a now affordable payment. A ticket to New York from London is a fifth of the monthly wage now in 2002. This is because aeroplanes can now carry more people and use less fuel, which brings down the cost of airfare. Planes can travel further and faster than any other mode of transport.

Better holiday resorts have been opened to attract more people. In L.E.D.C's more resorts and hotels have opened and offer a wider range of activities for tourists for example a place like Kenya can offer safari holidays. Far off places have become more and more popular because there is better climate, longer days, more sunshine and higher temperatures, which would appeal to British holiday goers.

"FAR-OFF" PLACES

It's not easy to define what "far-off" actually means because there are many different definitions. The dictionary definition of far is: e.g. far away from other things, a long distance away, very distant. "Far-off" places could be places that are a long way away from you e.g. Australia would be "far-off" to someone living in England. The meaning depends on the location and age of a person. If someone is old they may see Scotland as being a "far-off" place whereas a young person may define a "far-off" place to be America. Here are some examples of "far-off" destination.

REMOTE PLACES

The dictionary definition for remote is - out of the way; situated away from main centres of population and society, far away from places where people live. A remote place is basically a place that is a long distance away from any other civilisation. On the map below I have highlighted some remote places.

EXOTIC PLACES

Exotic means something that is foreign, or coming from a foreign country, strange, very unusual and something beautiful. An exotic place could be a place where there are beautiful beaches, palm trees, hot climate and blue skies, or a place that has a different environment to where you are living now e.g. Bahamas. A destination that has magnificent scenery can be also seen to exotic.

Here are some examples of exotic destinations:

Tourists today are not content with the average package holidays that have the same old scenery and offer the same boring tours to the Mediterranean resorts. Tourists now want a change and they have now begun traveling further for their yearly holidays. People are now traveling to more developing countries such as Kenya, Egypt, Jamaica and Thailand. These holiday destinations are becoming more popular because they offer a wider rage of activities and their different cultures and environment encourage more people to travel to them. The typical holiday destinations are becoming less popular because they had become so popular that they were over crowed with tourists, this resulting in the area being over run by hotels and clubs to satisfy the tourists. The natural environment and culture was ruined and this has put many tourists off traveling there.

An L.E.D.C is a less economically developed country. It is a country that is still developing and has less money than countries such as the U.K. L.E.D.C are places that have less money to spend on their country this resulting in bad living conditions and a lack of services such as hospitals and schools. These countries are constantly trying to improve their standards of living and rely on money coming in from tourists to gradually improve one area at a time. An example of an L.E.D.C is Kenya. These countries are in general "poor" and their gross national ...
