I am going to find out how the opening fifteen minutes of Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet uses signs and symbols and technical codes to prepare the viewers for the rest of the story.

Romeo and Juliet is about two families, the Montagues (Romeo) and the Capulets (Juliet). The two families had an argument a very long time ago and they still detest each other even though the argument happened so long ago and they do not even remember what the ancient feud is even about. The two children of these families fall in love with each other at a party held at the Capulet mansion. Soon after the party they meet and they vow to marry each other. The next day they get married. Because of all the fighting that has occurred between the two families the prince or as he is portrayed in this version of Romeo and Juliet the Chief of Police has told the families that the next family member to start a civil brawl will be executed. Unfortunately just after the marriage of Romeo and Juliet there is another brawl between the Montagues and the Capulets and Mercutio (Romeo's best friend) is killed by Tybalt (Juliet's cousin). This causes Romeo to kill Tybalt. As Romeo was avenging Mercutio's death and Mercutio was related to the Chief of Police Romeo was given the punishment of banishment not death. Juliet is very upset at this and her family arrange a marriage with Paris (The Governor's son) to make her feel better, consequently making Juliet feel worse. Juliet goes to the priest for help saying that she would rather kill herself than marry Paris, so the priest gives Juliet a potion which he tells her to drink, it will make her appear as if she were dead. The priest also tells Juliet that he will arrange to inform Romeo and reunite her with him. Juliet takes the potion and everything goes to plan except the message the priest sent Romeo never reaches him; instead Romeo gets the message that Juliet is dead. Romeo immediately goes back to Verona (beach) and is intent on visiting the corpse of his beloved and ending his life by poisoning himself. Romeo buys the poison and poisons himself where Juliet lies in the church. Juliet awakes just after he takes the poison, realises it went wrong, panics reaches for Romeos gun and shoots herself.

In the opening 15 minutes of Luhrmann's version of Romeo and Juliet the viewers see a TV screen which switches to a news broadcast which shows a newsreader, she reads the prologue, this is then followed by visual images of the prologue and visual information about the two families like the family trees next to one another. The separation between the two families is emphasized by the use of skyscrapers and religious imagery in the form of the statue of Jesus while the prologue is being repeated. Also newsreel is used to emphasize the separation between the two families. Scenes of police cars and fire are shown to show that there is anger between the two families. The characters are introduced by seeing them turn around and their name and role being put beside them (lettering on the screen) or them being introduced in a way that tells you a little about them i.e. cameras flashing indicates fame, importance and public interest when Fulgencio Capulet is introduced. Some more images of scenes throughout the film are shown to support the prologue and then the film title is shown. After this a car is shown with a group of boys riding in it, they are introduced as the Montague boys. The Montagues pull up outside a petrol station, and Benvolio goes into the toilets. Unfortunately at the same time the Capulet boys pull up outside the petrol station. They are introduced by the viewers only being able to see the shoes and legs of a Capulet as one of them steps out of the car. The Camera pauses and 'the Capulet boys' is shown on the screen. Some women walk by and the viewers see their feet and legs. As the ladies walk to their van the viewers discover they are nuns and schoolgirls. The Montague boys make crude gestures towards them. The van drives away and a Montague gasps as he sees Abra Capulet. Abra Capulet is introduced by lettering on the screen. The second Montague lifts his shirt out of the way to show a gun, it is decorated with a cross and 'Montague' on a banner. Abra then lifts open his jacket to show a gun it is a cross with a bird and it has 'Capulet' on a banner. Abra hisses and shows some kind of teeth guard, second Montague falls back in car from fright or shock. The Capulets mock the Montagues and laugh at them. Abra gets back into the car. First Montague bites his thumb at Abra, insulting him and Abra gets angry, he shows this by thumping his fist on the steering wheel. Montagues scramble and hide behind their car in panic. Abra gets out of car and confronts the Montagues about the thumb-biting incident. Benvolio comes out of the men's toilets at this moment and draws his gun. First Montague opens a car door and hides behind it, a woman persistently hits him with a handbag. Benvolio holds up his gun and tells everyone to stop. Benvolio is at this moment introduced by lettering on the screen. There is a close-up of Benvolio's gun and 'Sword 9mm' is on it. Tybalt is introduced by the lighting of a cigarette with a match that is then dropped. Tybalt is introduced with lettering on the screen. Benvolio only wants to keep the peace and puts his gun back into the holder. Tybalt crunches out the match with heel. There is a gunfight and Tybalt knocks Benvolio to the ground. 1st Montague shoots randomly and hits a can and the 'add more fuel to your fire' sign. The Montagues pull out of the station and Tybalt aims at them, shoots and hits a Montague. Tybalt drops his cigarette and sets fire to a puddle of spilled out petrol. Benvolio climbs over cars shooting at Tybalt. The petrol station catches fire. Flames and smoke are shown. The fames clear away to show the statue of Jesus and then a helicopter flying above the city Flamencio Capulet is show with his head up, he looks toward a TV and he sees the news, the news broadcast is about a 3rd Civil Brawl. Ted Montague is shown riding in his car he does not look happy. The Montague car pulls up and the number pate is shown. Ted Montague reaches for his long sword (a gun) but his wife stops him. Chief of Police arrives at the scene of the Civil Brawl and orders Tybalt and Benvolio to lower their weapons. Benvolio and Tybalt both drop their guns at the same time.

Luhrmann uses newsreel all throughout the first opening 15 minutes of Romeo and Juliet. He uses newsreel as an easy medium to show and put across certain points, for example to back up the prologue with photos and headlines from newspapers. Also using the Television at the start, with the newsreader reading the prologue on the news makes it easier for a modern audience to relate to the film and get interested in the plot. The news is usually associated with reality, what is really happening in the world or country or place so using the newsreader to ...
