Source C shows a photograph taken in Jarrow in 1932, it shows unemployed men. The photograph has the following views. It shows unemployed men wandering around with nothing to do. They look bored. I would say that these men would have worked at Palmers Shipyard. The closure of the shipyard would have left them unemployed and without the prospect of a job due to the Wall Street Crash. There were terrible effects after the Wall Street Crash as it lead to extreme unemployment in towns like Jarrow, where they relied on the Shipyard for jobs. As they ships weren't needed to transport goods they were shutdown.
Source C supports Source A because source C shows a photograph of unemployed men. In source A it says ''There was no prospect of a job'' which means that he was unemployed and was unlikely to find a job. There were many people in the photograph so the source tells me that many people were unemployed. This supports source A as in source A the author says ''Then in 1931 everything went bankrupt and we in Jarrow had to suffer for it''. This means that many people had to suffer; obviously many people had lost their jobs. The photograph was taken in 1932 which was around the time that the description of Jarrow was written, it was a year after author said that everything had gone bankrupt.
You can see that the men in source C are unemployed because they are wearing their own clothes. As they are not dressed in work clothes they are most likely to be unemployed. The source tells me that they are poor as I can see a man with trousers that are too small for him. This relates to what source A tells me as in source A it says ''We patched up all our clothes as did all the others''. This tells me that they did not have enough money to buy new clothes when they became too small or ripped. This suggests that they were too poor to buy essentials such as food and clothes.
In source C it states that these men are unemployed with no income and no way of buying food and clothes. This supports source A as in source A it says ''Often my wife and I went without a meal on Sunday in order to feed the children''. This is hinting that they have no money, as they can't even afford to buy enough food. If they often go without a meal on Sunday they are likely to be unemployed.

From source C I can see that no shops are open. This suggests that everyone has no money as if nobody has any money to buy food from the shops then the shopkeeper would go out of business and they would then have no money. This supports source A again as source A is a description of Jarrow written in the early 1930's and is saying how poor he is, and how they in Jarrow suffered. Source A also says ''in the town 156 shops were closed or empty'', this suggests that all the shops did go out of business due to the poverty of Jarrow.
I can also see from source C that nobody is carrying any shopping bags. This backs up the paragraph above as it proves that nobody is buying anything because they have no money. This would have lead to the closure of all the shops. This supports source A as in source A he says ''from 1922 I was unemployed'' and ''then in 1931 everything went bankrupt''. He wouldn't have received any unemployment benefits as these were cut. So he wouldn't have been able to go shopping as he would have had no money.
Source C does support source A as it shows Jarrow in desperate times. Clearly people are suffering if they are unemployed and walking around aimlessly. This is how Jarrow is described in source A. In source A it says ''everything went bankrupt and we in Jarrow had to suffer for it''. Both sources clearly state how people in Jarrow suffered.
However there are some points that don't support source A, as in source C you can see that they are all wearing clothes that have not been patched up. Although one person's trousers are small they are not ripped and ragged, but in source A the author claims that everyone wears ripped and ragged clothes. He says ''we patched up all our clothes as did all the others''. We can clearly see though that the unemployed men in the picture aren't wearing patched up clothes.
Source C does not support source A because in source A it says that ''everything went bankrupt'' and ''there was no prospect of a job''. In a way Source C does not support that because you can clearly see a car in the background which means that someone owns a car. This suggests that some people were in better condition as cars were very expensive to buy and the people in Jarrow were meant to be suffering from the bankruptcy and having no money.
I can see that source C does not support source A because in source C I can see a woman wearing a fur coat. This is hinting that there were some wealthy people at the time. This doesn't support source A because in source A the author said that he and his wife often went without a meal on Sunday just to feed the children. This shows poverty not wealth.
A weakness of source A is that he was a councillor so he could have been biased. He could have gone ''over the top'' and made Jarrow out to be extremely poor. I think this because source C does not show the unemployed men suffering. They do not like they are starving and I cannot see anybody dressed in rags. There is also no clear purpose of source A; we do not know why the author wrote this description of Jarrow. If the author was trying to get sympathy, he could have made the town sound poorer than it really was. Source C is only a general photograph; not taken to show the poverty in Jarrow as the men don't look like they are suffering. In this case source C does not support source A. Source C is not reliable as we do not know why it was taken or who took it, it may not show Jarrow's true living and working conditions. It may be used as propaganda and show people to be ''happy'', whereas they are actually suffering.
Overall source C supports source A because it shows that most people in the town were unemployed. Everyone in the photograph is wandering around aimlessly in normal clothes so this shows that they were unemployed. If they were unemployed they must have been poor. This is what source A is saying about Jarrow. It is saying that Jarrow was poor and that people suffered because of it.
Source B shows the unemployment figures for Jarrow in 1927 to 1936. It states that the town's workforce was 9,700.
Source C strongly supports source B because source C shows unemployed men wandering around with nowhere to go and nothing to do. This supports what source B shows because source B shows the rate of unemployment increase over the years. Source C is taken in 1932, and on the unemployment figures in source B, in 1932 over half of Jarrows workforce were unemployed. In 1932 it states that 6,793 people out of the town's workforce were unemployed. The whole town's workforce was 9,700. This shows that 1932 was a time of extreme unemployment in Jarrow.
In source C people are wearing casual clothes so they are definitely not working, or employed. They seem bored, like they have nothing to do and are just wandering around aimlessly. This supports source B because in source B the amount of the town's workforce who were unemployed increased massively. In 1927 only 2,987 people out of the 9,700 people were unemployed. However by 1931, 6,603 people were unemployed. This is the year before the photograph was taken. Since then the numbers of people who are unemployed have only increased, only by a small amount though. In 1932, the year when the photograph was taken, 6,793 people were unemployed.
Source C expands further than Source B because source C gives you an idea of what life was like in Jarrow because it is a photograph. Source C is not reliable as the photograph may be staged to look like they were happy and nobody was suffering.
Source C does not support source B because source C shows men in casual clothes so they were definitely not working. However it may be a Sunday so everyone is resting and they are not working so they are wearing their own clothes.
Source C also shows a car in the background which suggests that some people were in better condition that others. Some people must be quite wealthy to own cars as they were expensive. This does not support source B as source B clearly shows that 6,793 of the town's workforce were unemployed. If they were unemployed they would not have been able to afford a car.
I do not know the purpose of source C or B. Source C may be exaggerated and it is not reliable as we do not know why it was taken and who took the photograph. We do not know the origin or purpose of source C and it might not show true living and working conditions. All three sources contain evidence of unemployment. We are not sure about the origin and purpose so we do not know the reliability of source B and C. Source B's purpose could be to make Jarrow sound poorer than it really was by showing the unemployment figures increase drastically. However the purpose of source C could be to show Jarrow in happier times as the photograph could be staged to show that the people in Jarrow were not suffering.
Overall source C supports source B because Source C shows unemployed men, wearing their own clothes, with nothing to do and nowhere to go. The source shows evidence of unemployment. This supports source B because source B shows that the amount of the town's workforce who were unemployed increased rapidly. Most people were unemployed when the photo was taken, and the photograph reflects this.
