Describe the treatments available to help infertile couples have children.

There are many people in the UK who are infertile. To be infertile means to be unable to produce offspring. These people all have different medical problems which fortunately have many solutions however with disadvantages as well as advantages. However some people choose to stay infertile no matter how much they want a child. They might believe in a particular religion where it teaches that only God has the right to decide matters of life and death and he would be the one to decide whether they should have a child or not.

As mentioned before, there are many solutions for infertile couples depending on their situation. Some infertile couples have problems with the male partner, female partner or both of the partners involved. Scientists and Medical specialists have formed many solutions to suit different situations.

When a man has a low sperm count he can try out two methods to make him fertile. He can take up Artificial Insemination or/and Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ISCI). Artificial Insemination involves concentrating different semen samples and injected into the neck of the woman's womb when she is ovulating. Although it has been existent for the past 50 years, this technique has a low success rate. The ICSI technique is a little less complicated. It just requires a single sperm of the man to be injected into the woman's womb.

When the woman is the person who is the cause of the infertility she also has two solutions that she could apply to. This being egg donation and surrogate mothers. In egg donation both the donor and the recipient have to be harmonised in order for the IVF treatment to work. Surrogacy is another alternative for infertile women however it isn't seen as very popular. If for any chance the women cannot go through any treatments such as the IVF, she can have a surrogate mother who carries the baby to term and hands him/her to the 'commissioning' women at birth.

The four other methods for infertile couple which both the partners play a part are Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer (GIFT), Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT), in Vitro (IVF) and the Pre-Implantation Diagnosis (PID).

GIFT involves the egg and sperm being placed into a fine tube. The tube is then inserted into the women's fallopian tube releasing the contents. Although there is scientific help for this sort of treatment, it is also seen as fertilisation taking place naturally since the egg and sperm meet after on.

ZIFT is the complete opposite of GIFT. This involves the egg ...
