Physics HL Lab Report:
Experiment to Examine the Strength of a Magnetic Field
Title: Experiment to Examine the Strength of a Magnetic Field
Aim:
To examine the relationship between the strength of the magnetic field at different points near a bar magnet by comparing it with the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field.
Apparatus:
Bar magnet, compass, ruler, protractor, sheet of paper, masking tape.
Theory:
In this experiment you will place a bar magnet at one end of a sheet of paper, so that the longitudinal axis of the magnet is perpendicular to the magnetic N-S line in the laboratory. The line showing the axis of the magnet is extended across the paper. A compassed placed at any point along this line is acted upon by two magnetic fields at right angles to each other. One of these is the magnetic field of the magnet B, which always acts along the axis line. The other is the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field M, which acts at right angles to the axis line.
