Part 2 Cezanne Look carefully at plate 1.3.24, Cezanne's Jug and Fruit (1885-87), and Plate 1.3.30, Zurbaran's Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose (1633). In no more than 500 words, outline what you think are the main differences between them. The first thing we notice when we analyse these two paintings, is the difference between the composition and its overall effect. By that I mean, colour range, delineation, light source, brushwork, etc. Zurbaran uses a wide tonal range, and the way the light falls into the picture gives a dramatic contrast between the lightest and the darkest elements on the painting (Inside Art, Light, dark and colour). ...read more.


The linear perspective for these two paintings are diverse, Cezanne's fruits are painted bigger on the picture plane, giving the sense that the spectator can actually touch the fruits on the canvas, while on Zurbaran's painting he uses the picture's space to give the sense of depth between the virtual world and the viewer, as if the viewer could stand in front of the painting and still have the sense of distance between him and the fruits. The delineation is also different, in Zurbaran's painting. In Cezanne's work, he uses a painterly brushstroke giving a more expressive effect and where the brushstroke is clearly visible on the canvas. Also these two artists were working in different times; Zurbaran painted Still life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose in 1633, 200 years before Cezanne. Zurbaran was a traditionalist, his paintings were more realistic and his aim was to portray the world on canvas. On the other hand Cezanne disapproved everything that came from the traditionalists, as he mention in a letter that he wrote to his mother, saying that he had to work hard in order not to give his paintings the final perfection (Book 1, Reputations, p.67).
