Albany Lodge

The first business which I have chosen is Albany Lodge Guest House.  It is placed in Portrush town centre, Eglinton Street.  Albany Lodge is a tertiary business.  Albany Lodge has been open now for about two years but before that there was a bed and breakfast there called Mount Royal.  Albany lodge’s purpose is to provide a service which is accommodation to anyone looking say for instance a weekend break.  Within the business there are 10 rooms which include   double rooms, 4 twin rooms, and a four poster room with a Jacuzzi bath and a King size room, all rooms include a sea side view and all the necessary essentials, and as an extra welcome gift each room comes with a complimentary bottle of wine (red, white or rosie) and a box of chocolates, but with the four poster suite you get a bottle of wine, bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates.  Albany lodge is a partnership business which is owned by two men, which do their best to make your stay as warm and friendly as possible.

These are the questions that I put to the owner of the business:

  • What is the name of the business?
  • What is the size and scale of the business (e.g. number of employees/number of customers/whether customers are local, national or international)?
  • Who owns it (e.g. is it in the public or private sector, is it a private or public limited company)?
  • How does the ownership link to the size and scale of the business?
  • In which industrial sector does the business operate?
  • Is this sector increasing or decreasing?
  • What types of activities are carried out by the business?
  • Has the business changed in size or changed its activities over the last few years?  If so why?
  • Does the business expect to change in size in the near future?
  • What is the main aim of the business?
  • What are the main objectives of the business to meet these aims?
  • How do the objectives help the business to judge how well it is meeting its aims?
  • If the number of competitors increased or decreased, would these affect the aims and objectives?  If so, in which way(s)?
  • What functional areas are there?
  • What type of work does each one carry out (excluding human resources and customer services)?
  • How do the functional areas work together to support each other and the aims of the business?
  • To what extent do they use ICT to do this?
  • Are there any improvements you would like to see in the way the functional areas work together?
  • Could ICT be improved or developed to help this in the future?

  • What oral methods of communication are used in the business?
  • What written methods of communication are used in the business?
  • What communication methods are mainly used for internal communications?
  • What communication methods are used to communicate with customers?
  • How is ICT used to enhance the choice of communications?
  • How effective do you think communications are in all these areas?
  • How do you think customer communications could improve?
  • Do you think ICT could be used more to improve customer communications?
  • If so, in what way(s)?
  • Where is the business situated?
  • How long has it been located there?
  • Has the business ever been relocated?  If so why?
  • What factors could cause the business to relocate in the future?
  • Who are the main competitors?
  • What marketing are undertaken to make sure the business competes successfully?
  • What actions could competitors take which would seriously affect the business?
  • If this happened, what would the business do and why?
  • Most businesses are affected by changes in economic conditions, such as changes in interest rates, exchange rates, and the cost of raw materials.  Which of these would affect you the most, and in what ways?
  • Dos the businesses have any aims or objectives related to the environment?
  • What environmental policies are there?
  • How does the business make sure it operates within environmental laws?
  • Are there any new environmental laws, which the business will have to consider?  If so, what changes might it make?
  • Are there any other environmental considerations the business will have to take into account in future?  If so, what will it do?

Aims and Objectives

In all businesses it is important to have aims and objectives.  An aim is a goal that the business wants to achieve.  A business may have only one aim or several aims.

  • In a private sector, businesses aim to make a profit.  Public sector businesses aim to make a profit if possible.
  • All businesses aim to provide goods and/or services
  • When times are difficult the business usually aims to survive
  • Some businesses aim to grow
