Outputs- Information to be output
The information about the hamsters is found in the text file that will help people on how to take care of hamsters. In the text files there is information about: handling your hamster, cages, feeding your hamster, drinking bottle, common illnesses and health problems, exercise and holidays. All of this information will be placed in the two-middle/inside pages of the leaflet. The middle pages will also included sub-headings that will stand out and one picture. On the front page there will be a title and a picture of a hamster. The pictures I will get from the Graphic Files (all in jpg and gif format). There are four and from the four I can choose two of them. On the back page of the leaflet there will be surgery details such as the veterinary surgery’s name, address, phone number number, surgery opening times, weekend surgeries that are just for urgent cases and the hours emergency information. This exact information of the Park View Veterinary Surgery details are on the next page.
Inputs:
There are several inputs that are required for this task. Firstly bellow I have listed the exact surgery details that will go on the back page of the leaflet. Secondly, I have clearly stated what needs to go on the front page. The last input required for this task is the Text File which contains information about the hamster and that will be inserted in two middle pages of the leaflet.
The Inputs For The Leaflet Are As Follows:
- Veterinary surgery’s name (Park View Veterinary Surgery)
- Veterinary address (Park View Veterinary Surgery, 27 Park View, Lances, LA6 9EJ.)

Testing:
I do not need to test for this solution, as a leaflet cannot be tested. However you might be able to take a survey on people’s opinion and see what they think of the leaflet.
Task Number 2- System For Calculating The Price Of Dog Training Courses:
Problem/ Situation:
The surgery pays a trainer to hold a number of sessions. Owners bring their dogs and learn how to control the dog and make it obey them. The places that are hired are in one of the three locations: The Barn, The Hall or The Sports Club. Each course has 8 training sessions. The Park View Veterinary Surgery has to pay the trainer and pay for cleaning after each session has finished. Then there are the rewards for the dogs and each dog get a special training collar. Lastly the trainers wont have more than 15 dogs at a time. All the location’s that are used are only big enough for 15 dogs.
Broad Solution:
The solution is to find out the price to charge the owner depending on the number of dogs on the course. I must work out the charge by adding up the total cost and dividing the answer by the number of dogs booked on the course. The system must be able to calculate what to charge each owner depending on the number of dogs at each of the locations used. We also have to take in account that the trainer wont’ have more than 15 dogs. I need to design a system so that Park View Veterinary Surgery does not go over the maximum number of dogs. This is called validation.
Software:
The type of software that would be appropriate to complete this task is spreadsheets. This is because of many reasons; firstly one the reason is that it is user friendly and easy to use. Secondly it has many features that makes this software unproblematic to use such as a spinner. With a spinner you can go through all the numbers and check that you have got the correct sum. Thirdly, it lets us use formulas to work things out and it has got the auto sum feature, which needs less effort and time. Lastly, you can format the cells and change the numbers to time, currency, percentage etc and you also align your number or text the way you would like it.
Data:
The files and data that I need to use is in AQA- set assignment booklet, on page 11 and 12. I have not been given any files as all the formulas and costs have been stated in the booklet. The information that it contains is about the Collar costs, Rewards cost, Cleaning costs, Basic trainer costs, Trainer costs per dog and Rent costs. In addition the minimum number of dogs for a course in each location and the maximum number a customer will pay is all included in the AQA- set assignment booklet.
Outputs- Form Of Output:
The full product that will be produced is a spreadsheet that will be easy to understand and you must be able to change the cost the of each or the number of sessions. The spreadsheet will included the different formulas such as: collar costs, Rewards cost, Cleaning costs, Basic trainer costs, Trainer costs per dog and Rent costs. These formulas will be put under different columns and will be clearly labeled. It will be laid out in a clear and simple way so when it is printed out it is to read and understand what is in the spreadsheet.
Outputs- Information To Be Output
The information that needs to be outputted all includes costs or formulas. The formulas that are needed are the Collar costs, Rewards cost, Cleaning costs, Basic trainer costs, Trainer costs per dog and Rent costs. The total of those formulas will then need to be divided by the number of dogs to work out the charge for each dog. Lastly you also need to work out the minimum number of dogs for each course, in each location. The working out of these formulas will be done in spreadsheet.
Inputs:
Most of the inputs for this task are the formulas and three of the inputs are the charges for each of the three hired locations: The Barn, The Hall and The Sports Club and they are listed bellow:
- Collar costs= £1.15 x number of dogs
- Rewards cost= £1.30 x number of sessions
- Cleaning costs= £6 x number of sessions
- Basic trainer costs= £20
- Trainer costs per dog= £1.0 x number of dogs x number of sessions
- Rent costs= rent x number of sessions
- The Barn= £8 for each session
- The Hall= £15 for each session
- The Sports Club= £13.50 for each session
- Total Cost of collar, rewards, cleaning, trainer basic, trainer per dog and rent is divided by the total number of dogs to work what to charge for each dog
Desired Outcomes And Performance Criteria:
The system must be easy to understand and you must be able to change the cost of each time or the number of sessions. The way to go about this is for each column I should have a heading with the formulas clearly written. This then will make it much easier for Park View Veterinary Surgery to edit which formula they would want to and it more user friendly. To make this spreadsheet straightforward to use I will use one of Spreadsheet’s features which I have mentioned earlier, formatting cell. I can format the cells to suit the way they are supposed to be for example the cells which will need to have currency in them I will format them that only the correct Pound currency can be use in the selected cells. Or another example that I could take in account is if I do not want numbers to be written into a text cell I could also format the cell. I could also use the formatting cells to align the title of the column so it stands out and make it clear. The user input that is required for this task are all the different costs such as collars, rewards cleaning etc. The total cost will be calculated no matter which ser input is changed and this can be done in spreadsheet.
The Outputs Identified:
- The cost of cleaning up at the end of each session
- The cost of the trainers plus an extra £1.10 for each dog
- The rent of each of the three locations: The Barn, The Sports Club and The Hall
- The number of session per course
- The minimum number of dogs each for a course in each location- 15
- The maximum the customer will pay- £50
- The cost of training collar for the dogs, they need once collar each at the start of the course.
- Cost of a bag of dog rewards for each session
- The charge for each dog
- The total cost of the course
Testing:
I can test the following things:
- Formulas of Collar costs, Rewards cost, Cleaning costs, Basic trainer costs, Trainer costs per dog and Rent costs. I can test for that by checking that my calculations of the formula are the same as the one given to me by Park View Veterinary Surgery
- Total Cost- I can do that by calculating the formula given above and dividing it by the total number of dogs to out work what the charge is. If it is equivalent to the one in the AQA- Set assignment booklet than I have calculated my formulas correctly.
- Validation- My cells have been formatted for example to currency, alignment and cells that cannot allow certain things such as number or text. I can test validation, by purposely typing in some incorrect data and seeing if it agrees to it. If it does it mean there has been an error in my Spreadsheet but if it doesn’t it means that my Spreadsheet is correct.
Task Three- Website:
Problem:
Park View Veterinary Surgery has looked at some other websites and has asked me to design a web page with just a few pages. The web site needs a home page three other pages. The three other pages will be about: The Treatment Costs page, The Dog Training Courses and The Animal Of The Month. The home page must link back to the other three pages and these must all link back to the home page.
Broad Solution:
The solution is to create a web site that has a home page and three other pages. The home page must link back to the other three pages and these all must link back to the home page. On the home page, there must be details such as the surgery name, address, phone number and surgery opening times must be included. In addition two animal pictures must be included on this page. One of the three other pages that need to be included is The Treatment Costs page and this must have a list of treatment and costs and four pictures. The pictures that are wanted on this page are a picture of a cow, a horse, a dog and a cat. The three other pages besides the home page are about Treatment Costs page, Dog Training courses page and Animal Of The month. The Treatment Costs page must have a list of treatments and costs and four pictures. The pictures that are wanted are a picture of a cow, a horse, a dog and a cat. On The Dog Training Courses page there will be a picture of a dog and information about the courses. Lastly The Animal Of The Month page must have information about cats and a picture of a cat.
Software:
The most appropriate software for this task is Microsoft FrontPage. This is because it has many features such as a scrolling marquee. This allows title to scroll across your screen with a choice of your background, font colour, font size, speed and direction. You can also insert text or picture hyper links. This makes your website look more eye-catching and motivating to look at. In addition, you can also preview your web site as if it was on the Internet, whilst you are working on it. You can insert a hit counter that will count how many people will visit your web site. One of the most well known features of Microsoft FrontPage is that you can edit the HTML by just typing in the HTML you want without any problems and it is extremely straightforward. Lastly, you can insert any sort of Media such as Audio Clips or Video Clips or Interviews etc.
Data Available:
Many data files have been provided to me to complete this task of creating a website. Firslty I have been give the test files for cat facts- information about cats. This will go on The Animal Of The Month Page. The second files that I have been give are the Dog Training course- information about the dog training courses. This will go on The Dog Training Courses page. The third files that I have provided are the Treatment costs- information about the treatment costs at the vets. This will go on The Treatment Costs page. Lastly I have been provided 12 images where 4 of the images will be inserted on The Treatment Costs page. One picture will be inserted in The Dog Training Courses page and The Animal Of The Month will have a picture of a cat. On the home page I can choose out of the images that I have been given to insert two pictures on the homepage. I have been given clipart files so that I can use them for hyperlinks. The Text files and Graphic files and clipart files names are listed down below:
- Text files- Cat Facts
- Text files- Dog Training Course
- Text files- Treatment costs
- Graphic files- Cat 1.jpg
- Graphic files- Cat 2.jpg
- Graphic files- Cat 3.jpg
- Graphic files- Cat 4.jpg
- Graphic files- Dog 1.jpg
- Graphic files- Dog 2.jpg
- Graphic files- Horse 1.jpg
- Graphic files- Horse 2.jpg
- Graphic files- Parrot.jpg
- Graphic files - Sheep.jpg
- Graphic files - Turtle.jpg
- Clipart files- Clip Art 1 Dog.bmp
- Clipart files- Clip Art 2 Cat.bmp
- Clipart files- Clip Art 3 Syringe.bmp
- Clipart files- House.bmp
Outputs- Form Of Output
The form of output that this task will take is that it will be a web site with a home page and three other pages. The home page will link to the three pages and these all links back to the home page. Each page will need a heading to explain what is on the page. The titles that will be stated are Treatment Costs, Dog Training Courses and Animal Of The Month. To make the site look more appealing pictures will be mentioned as said above and information about Treatment Costs, Dog Training Courses and Animal Of The Month will be included in full detail to make the website more attention-grabbing.
Outputs- Information To Be Output:
The information that needs to be outputted is the surgery’s name, address, phone number and the surgery opening times that will be on the home page. The treatment costs files will vary depending on whether the patient brings their animal to the surgery or have it treated at home. The cost is also affected by the type and size of the animal. In the treatment costs text files it included information about: Home Visit, Consultation at surgery, Out of hours consultation, Course of vaccination for dog, Course of vaccination for cat and booster vaccination. The Dog Training courses text file states the following:
- Dog Training Course run every month.
- They take place at one of the three locations: The Barn, The Hall and The Sports Club.
- Costs cost no more than £50 including a trainer collar
- Costs vary with location and the number of dogs on the course
- The maximum number of dogs on a course is 15
- The course consists of 8 sessions
- During the course the patient’s dog will learn to sit, stay, lie down, walk to heel without pulling on the lead and come when you call even when other dogs are present
- All dogs have to be fully vaccinated before they can be accepted on the course
Lastly, the other information that I need to be putted is the pictures and clips arts that I have mentioned on the previous page.
Desired Outcomes And Performance Criteria:
The performance criteria’s for this task is that each page will need a heading to explain what is on the page. I must use Treatment Costs, Dog Training Course and Animal Of The Month. The outputs that are identified are:
- A web site that will have a home page and three other pages
- The home page will link to the three other pages
- The web site will include text hyperlinks and picture hyperlinks
-
It must includes the surgery name (Park View Veterinary Surgery), Veterinary address (Park View Veterinary Surgery, 27 Park View, Lances, LA6 9EJ.), Veterinary’s phone number (01760 780003) and Surgery opening times (Monday to Friday from 9am – 11:30 am in the morning and from 4pm to 7pm in the afternoon) on the home page
- Two animal pictures on the home page
- The Treatments Costs Page must have a list of treatment and costs and four pictures of a cow, horse, dog and a cat
- The Dog Training Course page will have a picture of a dog and information about the course
- The Animal Of The Month page must have information about cats and a picture of a cat
Testing:
I can test for this task of creating website by checking that the text hyperlinks and picture hyperlinks are linked to the right pages. Lastly you can also get people’s opinion on your web site and what they think of it.
Task 4- Mail Merge
Problem:
Park View Veterinary Surgery needs to send a letter reminding customers about booster vaccination for their pets. Park View Veterinary Surgery, once a month needs to send a reminder letter to customer with a cat or dog due to have a booster vaccination in the next month. Cats and dogs should be vaccinated once a year.
Broad Solution:
The solution to this problem is to produce a mail merge letter instead of manually writing to everybody. You could also use the same template of mail merge instead of repeating the whole letter; it would save up a lot of time and effort. When using mail merge some of the fields such as person’s name, their pet’s name and when there vaccination last took place will be variable. This is because you need to change it for every person. However the letter will still have the same layout, font etc.
Software:
There are two software’s that would be appropriate to use in this task and they Word and Database. The reason for this being is that I need Word for mail merge but at the same time I need to get the information about the person’s name, pet’s name and last vaccination month and year. In addition Word has its many features such as helping you with writing a mail merge. When you are writing a mail merge the information is inserted without you having to do a lot of typing. Word also gives you formal letters for templates that you could use. Database, too has its many features such as forms, table, query and reports. A query is helpful for bring up something in specific instead of going through the whole database; again it saves a lot of time and effort.
Data Available:
The data that been made available to me is Csv and tab separated files- Customer data which contains the customers details. I also need the Graphics file (all in jpg and gif format), Headed Paper.bmp.
Output- Form Of Output:
The form of output it will take is that it will be a template letter that contains fields such as the person’s name, the pet’s name and the data of their last vaccination. It will be an A4 head paper with the name and add address details of the customer and hen it needs the name again at the start of the letter.
Output- The Information To Be Output:
The information that has to be outputted is the Customer Data file which is a Csv and tab separated files. This contains the customers’ details. I also need the other Csv and tab separated files for Pet Data as it contains the pets’ details.
Desired Outcome and The Performance Criteria:
The performance criteria for this take is that it contains the name and address details of the customer and then it needs the name again at the start of the letter. It also needs the correct pet’s name and last vaccination month and year. The letters should all be laid out in the same way.
Testing:
I can test for this system by finding the customers with dogs and cats that are due for a vaccination reminder in November 2003. I need to test my mail merge and make sure that the correct fields cold and that the template letter produces the correct information. For my database I can check that if I had any links between any table or had any forms or query that the data in them is correct.
