Many people find the National Waterway museum very interesting indeed, it explains about the waterway system from the past leading through times up to the future times. The antique side attracts visitors and is free and displays nature and antiques and also specialist collectibles. This is also a very good source of revenue. The shopping centre offers a wide variety of shops. Such as a coffee shop, sandwich bar, hair salon, Toys & book store, clothing shop and Ice cream parlour. There are also boat trips available through the summer they are available for public and private use.
The agency funding Gloucester docks site development is almost underway and the building blocks are almost finished. According to “The Citizen” newspaper the regeneration will cost around the staggering figure of £200 million. This is a huge investment and can only be great for the city of Gloucester. The regeneration project is expected to take about 10 years to complete according to Colin Molten the agency director of the Southwest Regional Development agency (SWRDA). He also said he was confident the framework for success was almost complete. The multi million pound complex will consist of:
- 90-room hotel.
- A brand new state of the art Gloscat campus costing £38 million.
- 1000 homes.
- Factory outlet store.
However some people are expressing their concern about the introduction of factory outlet stores. They are extremely worried about the impact to the smaller retailers, there is a real fear that many of shops will not be able to compete with the national retailers and therefore be forced to close. (See figure 9). Which would be awful for the local economy in many ways.
AIMS
My study area is located near the centre of Gloucester. It has been around since the 1300’s.
Maps - Gloucester Docks is situated here
My Aims
- Find out what people want?
I will produce a questionnaire containing questions, then create a graph and pie chart to show and produce results after.
- How that would be provided?
I would have to research their ideas on future developments.
- Does it really need to be redeveloped?
To find this out I will have to judge and do research on my own and ask other people on their opinion as well.
- Is it worth losing the historical side?
The historical side is important to some people, it is one of the biggest historical points in Gloucester, so it might be worth keeping on that note.
- Will it prove to be worse when it is finished?
What would happen to the docks if it where to be just left?
I would have to do more research and another questionnaire to find this out.
I am choosing this investigation because I think it is an important issue to investigate, because there is a lot of money invested in this project. This could have an impact on the historical side of the docks. So serious consideration needs to be undertaken before any work is done on the Gloucester docks as it could damage the economy.
HYPOTHOSIS
I will research and produce information on the Gloucester docks to find out if the people of Gloucester believe the docks really does need to be redeveloped, or if it is worth keeping it how it is today. Therefore preserving the historical side of it and not taking any major risks.
JUSTIFICATION OF HYPOTHESIS
My hypothesis was chosen because it is a question that needs to be answered, for example would it be a waste of tax prayers money, to expend the amount of effort and energy required to modernise the current docks. Only for the residents and visitors of Gloucester to file complaints for ruining the historical parts of Gloucester docks.
METHOD
Information I need is peoples views, opinions and ideas, and I need to find research of what other developments have been made and how people have reacted to the loss of historical places, and see what has happened after this has happened, and see if it is worth this loss.
To collect my primary data I will go around Gloucester and go to the actual docks. I intend to visit the docks when there are a lot of people there to feel what the atmosphere is like at the current time before any change has been made. I will use a digital camera to take pictures and collect evidence and information. I will also use simple questionnaires to find out what people think and try to support my hypothesis. Also I will collect some information from the tourist point at the docks.
I asked these types of questions in the questionnaire to really find out if people make use the docks. Also to find out if they would use the docks more if it had more attractions for them.
“do the docks affect you in anyway?”
“do you regularly visit the docks?”
I collected secondary data by going to the docks and collecting an information pack on the Gloucester docks.
I have also used the Internet to find out a whole variety of information regarding peoples opinions. I have used the local newspaper “The Citizen” to gather a lot of local thoughts and the latest information.
MY PHOTOS
I visited the docks and took my camera to show you what the docks are like at the present time. Figure 2 and 3 shows two of the old buildings that have been refurbished. Figure 2 has been used for the water ways museum. Figure 3 shows apartments and offices. Figure 4 shows one of the old buildings being turned into apartments. Figure 5 shows a close up of a finished warehouse. Figure 6 shows the canal boats, which visit the docks. Figure 7 shows the main basin where many boats are moored all year round. Figure 8 shows the Alexander warehouse, which was the first warehouse, built. In front of the warehouse is a tall ship of which many visit to be refurbished in the dry docks. Figure 10 shows several of the more housed and one of the new car parks. Figure 11 shows the crane that was used to lift the cargo to and from barges.

Presentation of Results
Analysis and Conclusion
The results for my questionnaire turned out to show that all the people I asked would like the docks to be redeveloped in one way or another. In regard to the question does the docks affect you in anyway I was somewhat surprised to find that it was an equal split of 50/50. Most of the people I asked want modern attractions, but a few people disagreed on spending so much money on the project. I think most people wanted the docks to be redeveloped because it does not effect them at the current time but when there are more attractions it may then attract them more than it did before. My results tell me that in the main people want the docks to be redeveloped. Most people can see that there will be huge benefits to be gained, which in turn will enable them to appreciate the docks much more than they do at the current time. My results were what I thought they would be apart from the fact I thought more people would want to save the historical side but it didn’t turn out that way in the end. As a conclusion I found out that the peoples view is that the docks should be redeveloped to the needs of the people. I have found that linked with my hypothesis that people don’t care about the historical side and it should be redeveloped with more up to date attractions.
Evaluation
My method was quite successful, I found out the data I needed of people to find out how they feel and what they want. The most useful data was the questionnaire because it gave me a first person view on what they wanted and what is needed for the docks.
The least effective was the secondary data because it was more about the historical side and not about what people wanted and if it is worth redeveloping the Gloucester docks or not. One way of improving my data would be to do more questionnaires and to ask people working at the docks on how they feel, and ask people who would produce trade from the docks if it were to be redeveloped. Also ask more people who use the docks at the moment more often. My results were quite reliable because they did show a clear pattern and trend. To increase the value of conclusions and results I would have to research more and find out how to improve.
To develop my course work as a further study I would have to ask more people how they feel about the docks and look to the future of what things would be like with all the redevelopment’s completed. I would need to do investigation regarding the costs of the project, in order to determine whether or not the people of Gloucester thought the expenditure was justified. I would also need to understand what sort of problems the redevelopment project have caused.
