NAME: MUZAMMIL JABLE GRADE 11: D4 Mr Wilson For attention: Mr K Ball Title: Grade 11 Job Shadow Report Terms of reference: I attended Gen Re Re-insurance Company for 3 days with a view to find out more about a career in Actuarial Science. Procedure: Day 1 of the work shadow began at 9am. I was received by the receptionist, Mrs Cecilia Matthews. I was promptly introduced to Ms Kelly Franks. Middle

Tea was taken at 3pm and I left at 5pm. Day 2 once again commenced at 9am. This time I was first taken through to the cafeteria to have coffee. Thereafter, Ms Franks led me to the advisory department to meet a Marketing Specialist, Louis Rossouw, who invited me to attend a meeting with a client in the boardroom. I was introduced to the way an Actuary would conduct factual presentations using statistics and speaking sophisticated technical jargon. Conclusion

I left at 5pm as usual. This initiative was definitely a fantastic opportunity for uncertain students, including myself, to clear up their minds with regards to their career choice. Among the positives include a great understanding of the work environment, the exposed to the formulas, rate, calculations involved in the Actuary profession. While working with the actuaries, I picked up many a pearl of wisdom through each employee?s stories of unique experiences and hereby formed lasting friendships. Recommendation: 1. The school should not stipulate exact dates when job shadow must be done. Most companies are not able to accommodate students on a certain date. Rather, provide a final date when it should be completed by. 2. Job Shadow assignments should be given before students carry them out. This would help the student to identify relevant details for use in these tasks. ...read more.
