The Odyssey, Homer
The Odyssey by Homer is an all-time classic in the world today. Some may think this epic poem is just an exciting and adventurous story, but it is much more than that. It is the story of every human's life. Odysseus, the main character in the story, can be seen as everyone in the world facing their day-to- day problems. The Odyssey has many events that can relate to everyday life such as obstacles, addictions and how there is a good and bad side to every person.
When someone is trying to get something done other things can often get in the way. Odysseus had to go through many obstacles before getting to hid home land. For example, when Odysseus and part of his crew got stuck in the Cyclops' cave it was a setback to getting home. "Neither replay nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering on the floor." (Lines 215-220) Not only did this event take up a lot of time and overall was a major setback, but Odysseus also lost a few of his men which makes the trip back home even harder with less men to help out. Daily citizens encounter distractions every day. A student might be trying to get homework done but their cell phone keeps going off. Or maybe a parent took papers home from work to look through but his or her kids keep interrupting him or her. People can usually get distracted while doing something important, something that must get done, just like Odysseus did in The Odyssey.
