Revised Flow Diagram & Measurement Strategy

ZAPS, Ltd. created by Buzz, a bio-mechanical engineer, produces toys that actually mimic their human counterparts in terms of speech and interaction. After successfully developing a new chip called "human engram", and the success with a new cybernetic toy, ZAPS faces new challenges to keep their momentum in the toy industry, remain being the leader in this segment by being competitive, and continue to quickly respond to consumer demand.

Equipo and Associates, a consulting firm, has been selected by ZAPS to identify and outline a problem of an operational nature. After identifying the problem, Team Equipo continues to update and reaffirm the previous information and problem solution. In this paper, Equipo will update the current flow diagrams, which identify the bottlenecks in the process, and expand the diagrams to include supplier dependencies. Equipo also developed a measurement strategy and a balanced scorecard for the operation. In addition, the paper covers the key areas to be measured and how measuring addresses the key improvement areas.

ZAPS is experiencing high overhead costs from the internal manufacturing of the new doll's electronics. Consideration is being given for outsourcing some of their manufacturing or technology activities in order to streamline processes and save costs. After extensive research, Equipo's recommendation is that they outsource the electronics of the new doll using a technology company called Aerotronics. Outsourcing will allow the company to focus on the remaining functions, which will allow resources to be used more efficiently elsewhere. This will result in increasing productivity, freeing-up additional resources, and improving the supply chain.
