Gregory’s Girl

Bill Forsyth wrote Gregory’s girl in 1981.  This play is a romantic comedy and deals with unexpected happenings.  For instance in the 1980s it was irregular for a girl to play football and a boy to cook.  The idea that a girl could be good enough to get herself on the school football team was quite revolutionary in that period of time.  This play deals with the young love of Gregory as he becomes more infatuated with Dorothy and how different genders can be stereotyped.

I am going to be analysing the football scene and the cooking scene and show how these two scenes would be portrayed in a theatre.

The audience will be seated in front of the stage in two/three sections this is because in these two scenes the characters will come of the stage and be running around or walking around the audience.  For example when Dorothy first emerges in the play she will be walking through the audience to get to the main stage, this will be very attention-grabbing for the reason that the audience will be able to associate with Dorothy as they will have closeness with her.  Between the scenes the lighting will go dim, this then gives the backstage cast time to change the props and quickly set the scene, by the time the lighting goes back to normal.  When the lighting goes from dim to bright the audience will then see Gregory jogging towards the cookery class, the scene will end when the lights begins to dim again.  In the first scene when Gregory is watching Dorothy playing football, he will be resting against the proscenium arch with Charlie and Andy who will be around him.  He will not move from here till the end of the scene, as he is so fascinated by Dorothy’s movements.
