Dorothy is a very attractive young lady. She has a beautiful figure and gorgeous 80s hair. She is the perfect example of what a typical 80s girl would look like. I know this because as soon as Gregory catches sight of her he immediately tells Charlie and Andy she is “gorgeous, she is absolutely gorgeous.” Although she is a typical 1980s girl she plays football and is much better than all the boys she plays with and against. Phil refuses to give Dorothy a trial but she argues against him and is adamant to get a trial. While she is playing football both the audience and Phil are shocked as they had never expected a girl to be so good at football, which was in those days described as a mans sport. Nowadays when the film is viewed the audience begin to realise where the idea of girls being as good as boys at sport took part. When she is playing it becomes obvious that Dorothy is confident and will get in the team furthermore she knows she was the best person at the trial she tells the audience and confirms it with Phil “I was the best, you know I was the best”.
Gregory on the other hand can be revealed as a contrast to Dorothy. This is because he is very unintelligent and unattractive whereas Dorothy has both of these qualities. Gregory who is the goalie for the school football team and has been so for some time is terrible at it and unaware of the fact that he is. Whereas Dorothy who probably hasn’t played in any football teams is an excellent football player and is confident about her football skills this is shown when she tells Phil “If I was the best I should be in the team.” Gregory becomes infatuated with Dorothy from the first moment he lays eyes on her and looks at her as a “dream” whilst Dorothy tries to pass him of as a classmate to whom she doesn’t pay much attention. In one of the previous scenes when Phil tells Gregory he is considering taking him of the team and replacing him with someone else Gregory is very concerned but as soon as he finds out this someone might be Dorothy he isn’t bothered as he is so smitten with her. “I think she’s taking my position,” he tells Steve.
Steve can also be shown as a contrast to Dorothy this is given that, as he is a boy he likes to and is very good at cooking. When watching this the audience will automatically think something isn’t quite right here first there is a girl who is extremely good at football and now there is a high school boy who is very good at cooking. When Steve is appears in the cooking scene Gregory instinctively obeys his commands when Steve tells Gregory to put the oven on Gregory replies with a “yes boss”, this indicates Steve is a clever lad and knows exactly what he is talking about.
Phil is a very confused teacher who always seems to have too much on his plate. In the football scene when he is telling the boys what he requires in order for them to get onto the team he is puzzled whether is was two or three things he was looking for “this requires two skills…three things.” As Dorothy comes into sight in the football scene Phil doesn’t give her a second glance and talks down to her as soon as he notices her. At first he asks her “what do you want lass” and when she doesn’t reply he asks again “what do you want dear.” Phil is unconsciously sexist when Dorothy wants a trial, he does this by telling her it was only “boys I wanted” but lucky for him Dorothy is very keen and willing and refuses to take no for an answer. As he sees Dorothy do her stuff he is very impressed and shocked at the fact that girls can be as good as the boys. He challenges Dorothy as he asks her to shoot at the goal while he is the goal keeper “lets see how you do against a real goal keeper” he tells her, each time Dorothy’s ball shoots past him and into the goal. This is mainly because even though Phil is a PE teacher is he the worst person at sport this makes him look extremely funny and clumsy.
Gregory’s Girl is a romantic comedy. It is a romantic play from Gregory’s point of view as he is so in love with Dorothy and his aim is to get together with her and make her his girlfriend he also thinks about if she will or if she wont “love me back”. The audience know this isn’t possible but find it funny as he makes attempts to impress her. If the film is seen from Dorothy’s point of view it then instantly becomes a comedy as where Gregory tries to impress her, she is aiming to get him together with her friend and doesn’t give him a second look, as she is not interested in him. The play is confronts gender stereotypes very interestingly as most of the main characters are opposite to what they are supposed to be. For example Anne from the cooking scene is calling noodles, strudels. This is both funny and interesting in a way that most people would think her, being a girl would know the difference between the two, furthermore she goes to a Steve, a boy and tells him she is making “strudel soup”, Steve instantly laughs at her and replies by saying “strudel soup? I’d love to try some of that” straight away you can tell Steve knows exactly what he talking about as there is no such thing as strudel soup Steve then corrects her and she walks off. In addition to this Phil who is the PE teacher is amazed at the fact that Dorothy being a girl and is better at football than any boy on the football team, he becomes shocked at this as he never expected girls to be good at sport. Most people would think, as Phil is a PE teacher he would at be good at the subject he is teaching but in fact he isn’t and when he sees Dorothy playing football he becomes ashamed of the fact that she is better than him. I think this play is very funny as it is very busy and a lot of miniature dilemmas are going on. For instance Dorothy is avoiding Gregory whereas he is trying to get close to her. I also like the way stereotyping is portrayed in this play it makes the play more attention-grabbing. If this play is acted out with actor’s personalities similar to the characters in the play it can become very fascinating and can reel anyone into watching it.
