From the moment Equality was born he was always different. He always knew he was different and “It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them” (Rand 21). Equality was born with a head to quick so learning was too easy. When Equality realizes “That to be free a man must be free of his brothers” (Rand 101), he finds that he has to be free of his brothers because they are holding him back from learning and trying to solve problems. The rules of his society are hard to change because man’s sole purpose is to serve and work for his fellow brothers. If men such as Equality cannot be separated from their brothers they will truly never be free because Equality’s brothers aren’t as unique as Equality and will hold him back from finding answers to life.
When Equality finds out that to be free, you must be free of your brothers, he made an interpretation of the society he lived in. He came to the realization that the society he lives in is very corrupt. Not in the way of legality, but in the way of restricting people to what they really want to do. Freedom once existed “But then he gave up all he had won, and fell lower than his savage beginning” (Rand 102). The society he lived in shaped the horrible mess of all the things that man created into nothingness that destroyed freedom and encouraged the idea that everyone is equal and formed a new society based off of this tenet. Equality. The new society destroyed freedom and many other things that made life better for people as a whole. Equality wished that it should be changed and his new society will be created so people have the independence to think freely and discovering possibilities to make life better.
By definition freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint (Freedom). Equality means that to be free a man you must be free of his brothers. What this means to Equality is that you don’t have to be away from your brothers, but you do have to have them not restrain you. In Anthem, Equality finds freedom in the tunnel when he starts working on his own without any interference from other people (35). He works freely with his own ideas and not the collaboration of a group work. Equality thrives and finds true freedom for himself when he has no rules to follow. According to Equality the true meaning of freedom is to be free from people, those who hold you back, and the ability to make decisions on your own without the influence of others.
In conclusion, the way Equality thinks has changed towards his brothers and society. Freedom has changed Equality and made him more of an individual and helped him discover electricity along with many other things. Freedom changed Equality’s life, and he plans on freedom also changing other people’s lives in the future and improving the society to make life better and easier for people to live and thrive together as a population.
