Explore the theme of loneliness in John Steinbecks ‘Of Mice and Men’.

In this essay, I’m going to express my exploration into a piece of writing. I was exploring the theme of loneliness in John Steinbecks ‘Of Mice and Men’. In this essay I will talk about main characters loneliness and how it’s created.

‘Loneliness’ is the word that I’m going to focus in this essay. Loneliness is describing a feeling that was lonely and empty with love of friendships. Loneliness can be measure in the quality of friendship and relationship. Loneliness is created               with lots of different factors; it can be created with the atmosphere of living, environment and historical content.

John Steinbecks has set up the story line well as he explained the caused of the loneliness that most of the worker had; he included a little background of Lennie.

In Of Mice and Men, the main characters that were focused to be lonely were George and Lennie, Candy, Crooks, Curley’s wife, Curley, Carlson and whit. Most of these characters were lonely because of the poor friendship that they had with living in the ranch. The ranch was in a really bad condition and this didn’t help to create the environment of living. I think the environment does affect the style of living.

In this paragraph I’m going to write about George and Lennie. George and Lennie were described as a couple of good friends as they needed each other. Lennie had George wherever he went and they take cares and protects each other. Lennie were not as lonely as the others because he had George and he loved animals to be his company. Lennie never thought of having a relationship with a girl and he can’t even organise himself properly; he needs to be told what to do and what was right and wrong. Even though George had Lennie wherever he went, he was the one who had to take cares of Lennie; Lennie was too dumb to organise himself. “Lennie, for God’s sake don’t drink so much”. George had to tell Lennie what to do and he in charged in their friendship. Being with Lennie made George felt lonely because he thought that without Lennie his life would be easier. “God, you’re lot of trouble, I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl.” George was hoping that Lennie wasn’t with him but deeply he cares for Lennie as he protects him, from others and from himself. “Don’t you even look at that bitch. I don’t care what she says and what she does, I seen ‘em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jailbait worse than her. You leave her be.” That quotation shows how George is devoted to Lennie, and possibly his own welfare, because if Lennie gets “the can” then George will have to go after him. Lennie was the one who always got into trouble and George had to get him out from it. George was lonely as he had a feeling that he wanted a girl in his life.

Candy was another character that was described lonely by John Steinbecks in Of Mice and Men. Candy was an old man who lived in the ranch like the other workers. He had his dog as his company. Candy was lonely because he was disabled after he had lost his arm. Candy cannot go into town like the others did because of his disability. Candy was lonely and he spread rumours to get attention from the other workers. Candy only had his dog as his company and he became more lonely after the death of hi his dog who were killed ...
