How does Hardy engage and sustain the reader’s interest in the two narrative tragedies?

(Trampwoman and Sunday Morning)

In the poem ‘A Trampwoman’s Tragedy’ Hardy catches the readers interest straight away by the place names that he uses which are also used throughout the whole poem. This engages the reader just on its own as it make them curious as to where the poem is going to lead and what happens in each of the places, it also shows a deeper insight into hardy himself due to the fact that we learn of places that he knows and obviously thinks highly of otherwise he wouldn’t have included them in his poem.

We also learn about the lifestyles and attitudes of the late 19th century in Wessex as it was based on a true event that happened there and this therefore sustains the reader’s attention due to wanting to know something that has happened. The lifestyles that are covered in the poem are what seem to be of people that are slightly poor and not that well off hence the name “Trampwoman”. The attitudes of the poem is that basically it is a tragedy when bad things happen to people that don’t deserve it but also that when you do something wrong you have to take the punishment. The attitude towards the woman in the poem though, I think is slightly different as she is the reason for the creation of the poem but the fact that everything bad happens because of her gives her a negative outlook and makes people think bad of her. Also the fact that the woman even teased about the baby not being her boyfriends is a sin in anyone’s eyes in those days as it means that she not only cheated but also is proud of it by just coming out with it like that which many people would have looked down on. This could also be why the poem is called what it is called as she acts like a tramp and what happens is a tragedy.

In my opinion this poem is a little morbid but I would not say a gothic horror as it’s not all about the detail of how the people have died, it’s just telling a story of what happened and how a woman is now on her own. I think it’s morbid as everyone close to her dies because of her. She acts like a “Trampwoman” towards her “fancy-man” which makes him take on revenge to kill the other man that she is meant to of slept with. However, the man that kills him is then put to execution which means ...
