It is ridiculous to argue that McEwan makes Jed Parry anything other than terrifying. What do you think of this view?

Jed Parry as a character raises key questions and ideas in ‘ Enduring Love’ as well as upbringing contrasting emotions amongst the readers. The actions , such as kidnapping Clarissa are evidently seen and are able to form an image of a terrifying human being which we lack sympathy for.Although this is true, there are many factors which I believe are able to reflect on the vulnerability of his character.

The whole novel is written from Joe’s point of view which could mean that it is an interpretation that is exaggerated. The way McEwan cleverly structures the letters , evidently confirms Joe’s opinion of him. However the gaps in between the letters we are readers can only assume mostly in Joe’s favor ; due to McEwan’s clear attempt of manipulation. Instead of seeing Parry as a person with a serious illness, we see him as a problem for Joe. Therefore there is a lack of sympathy and a ‘terrifying’ image as we are tricked into sympathizing for Joe.

Although Jed is noticeably ill , there is a sense of pity and sorry which Parry feels for Clarissa as he believes that Joe loves him and it will surely hurt her. This is shown on page 68 when he delicately suggests they should break the news to Clarissa. He says it very simply ‘ The only way is for the three of us to talk ‘. This exemplifies the caring and thoughtful side of him which is indeed far from terrifying. He’s evidently aware of other character’s emotions around him as well as his own. However this point could also be seen in a contrasting way. Jed can be viewed as manipulative in his attempts to get closer to Joe for which he uses Clarissa. He mentions her on page 68 ‘ Clarissa, It’s best to deal with this head on’. It’s like he knows that he has the evident power to jeopardize their relationship and use it to his advantage.Similarly although this can give him a negative image , Parry genuinely believes that they are in love and because of his condition he is unable to comprehend any other point of view ‘ Why won’t you admit what you are doing’.

Throughout ‘ Enduring Love’ Parry’s feelings for Joe gradually intensify even though he’s clearly frustrated with Joe who is blocking him out. He becomes more determined and begins to research more about his life as well as talking about his own ‘ You know nothing about the ordinary details of my life ‘. This reflects on their relationship as well as Jed’s and the readers’ We do not know everything about his life and therefore through McEwan we are heavily manipulated into believing that Jed is a ‘terrifying’ character. Further and deeper analysis begins to reveal more and more information as well as factors as to why Jed acted the way he did and his reasoning behind it. His overall intentions were not bad which is what these examples should show ; he is an unfortunate character with an unfortunate life.

** 2 Stars This essay has a great deal of potential: the writer shows a clear ability to discuss the complex character and to look at different interpretations. The essay is generally well written ( though there are some lapses in expression), quotes are included to highlight points made though more are needed. The essay ends abruptly, has no conclusion and is too short to get a good grade.
