Because Robert Frost was born on a farm, theme of his writings about nature, so other Modernists rejects him. Like other writer Robert Frost lived abroad and then back to the America. Robert Frost is seen a bridge from realism into Modernism. His form is traditional, his style is traditional but his questions are Modernist. He has traditional rhyme in his writings and poems look natural and realistic he has simple language and also we can see natural settings in his works. When we look one of the Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” we see a natural setting in first stanza at first line “Two roads diverged in a yellow Wood” very simple language, we can see there is a man who asks himself which road should he chose. In this poem the man refers America and this poem is about American’s entrance of First World War he is asking questions like a Modernist and also he is using nature so it is possible to see both Realistic and Modernist style in this poem. When we look “The Oven Bird” we see again there is a nature setting at lines 1,2,3,4 “there is a singer everyone has heard, Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird, who makes the solid tree trunks sound again. He says that leaves are old and that for flowers” we see there is an image of summer, bird, and tree. He wants to say that this bird is like a messenger tells the season passes. On lines 8 and 9 there is an image of summer everything natural. We see there is a Modernist thought time is passing things are getting old time is changing people are changing. In poem of “Design” we see he again talking about nature there is an image of spider and butterfly and a Modernist theme, human going crazy we need to believe of God.
When we look Wallace Stevens, it is very easy to identify Stevens being a Modernist. Stevens’ works match with Modernist thought much more than Frost’s. He is completely Modernist. When we take a look his poem “Of Modern Poetry” we see he tells us how a modern poetry should be. He asks questions at lines 3,4 and 5 we can see this “ What will suffice. It has not always had to find: the scene was set; it repeated what was in the script.” He wants to say that, how do we find something which is enough. He talks about very different ideas for modern literature. He says society is broken down, we can’t repeat things that described and he also says that we have to forget our past; we have to give up traditional. We must find the new context; it must be new poetry and new idea. Stevens was also called Supreme Fiction because he was thinking that poetry as a way of understanding reality.
Ezra Pound is the most important writer because he added new things in literature like T.S Eliot. Ezra Pound was novelist poet he has written traditional style, he use fun in his poetry so he has shocked middle class. He was anti middle class. He realised that America is too young and has no culture then he went to London in 1920 during this time he created new ideas for poetry. He rejected all old traditional poetry. He worked with W.B Yeats in London. He didn’t like too much fancy poetry, he liked direct poetry. He was against being sentimental. He had some rules about poetry he wanted to writers being free about form of poem he also says that don’t be too poetic. When we look his poem of “A Pact” we can easily see this poem addressed to Walt Whitman. He says he hate Whitman and also says you are stupid America have you long enough, you created new things but I redesigned it. As we can understand from first three lines “I make a pact with you, Walt Whitman I have detested you long enough. I come to you as a grown child” he used very direct language as he ruled he says what ever want to say very directly. When we look “In a Station of the Metro” we see it is very economic and intellectual images it is not too poetic.
T.S Eliot wasn’t only a poet he also a critic. He had great education. He also believed America has no culture and not enough history so he came and stayed in London. He had some theories for modern literature he believed emotion should not be sentimental but expressed though a set of objects and situations and he also believed poetry should be self-contained object, Eliot says while you are reading a poem don’t think about poet just think about the words. When we look T.S Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” we can clearly see he make a criticism about society and how they are behave. If we look lines 49 and 50 we can see he is talking about meaningless of the life how the people are monotonous. “For I have known them all already, known them all Have known the evenings, afternoons,” we see in this poem he keeps asking questions he is not like Pound, he isn’t as direct as him.
In conclusion we can say that Modernism has effected modern literature very much, especially Ezra Round and T.S Eliot’s theories, gave a different form to literature. Ezra Pound created Imagism he gave some rules about literature after he had gave this rules many poets went to London be able to talk wilt Pound about this rules. T.S Eliot added new thing to literature too he also criticize society he wrote a close reading from the text. Wallace Stevens was against to war he see poetry as a way of understanding reality. Robert Frost had a different style he mixed Realism with Modernism in his poetry. When we look all this poets we can see they create Modernism as a response of war, social troubles and culture and they wrote and criticize about this theme.
