Dear Ms Prude,

I am writing to you in reply of your letter of concern about the curriculum we teach here at Sydenham School. As you are already aware the students of year 10 are currently studying the modern version of Romeo and Juliet by Baz Lurhmann. This version of the famous Shakespeare play keeps the original story line but gives it a modern theme so the children can understand the language more easily through lighting, music, costume, camera angles and other technics Baz Lurhmann used when he made the film.

My first point is that you say the film is far too violent to be shown to the pupils, however in the original play it is as violent as the Baz Lurhmann version, but instead of swords he uses guns. Fighting plays a key role in the play as it helps the pupils understand what emotions the characters are feeling in the scene. Violence in films always has a moral message- Violence detroys love but love is greater in the end. This moral message is shown in Romeo and Juliet. The plan shows that violence is never the answer because if Romeo didn't kill Tybalt- Juliet's cousin, then him and Juliet could of been happy together and they wouldn't of have to result to killing them self. Also teenagers of this generation are used to viloence in films and are surrounded of viloence in everyday life for example violent video games, war, murder cases, the news.

Your daughter is coming to an age to see that sexual activity is not unusual.

Thirdly the setting has been changed to suit the theme of the ...
