The different attitudes to love

There are many different views of love in this play and many different views on why you should marry someone.

The two main characters in the play are Romeo and Juliet, these two fell in love at first glance, so love at first sight. This interpretation of love is where both people feel the same and it’s not just based on looks, it’s based on who that person is. Romeo and Juliet are the only examples of this in the play at the time it was set, there were a lot of arranged marriages so the people didn’t necessarily love each other, they were just told to marry people. However, it is very ironic that this is the couple that has to die in the play.

One such example of an arranged marriage in the play is the one between Lord and Lady Montague, not only was this an arranged marriage but Lord Montague was a lot older than Lady Montague.

Another example of an arranged marriage in the play is the one that nearly happened between Juliet and Paris. Paris like lord Montague was older than Juliet.

Mercutio`s idea of love is a very sexual one, he believes that love is only on the outside so he only likes the woman if they are good looking rather than what their personality is like, such as when he was talking about Rosaline to Benvolio, he talks about her very sexually. Another person who believes in the looks of a person is the nurse as she believes that a man should be good looking and should be able to make a woman pregnant. She is also very sexual in the way she thinks as when she was talking about Juliet as child she said `when she fell over and her husband had said that when you grow up you will be falling forward because of the weight of your chest`.

Friar Lawrence has a very different view to love than anyone else as he does believe in true love as he marries Romeo and Juliet. However, one of the only reasons he does this is because he thinks that it might stop the feuding between the two houses. He was also not going to wed, them as he thought Romeo was just infatuated with Juliet. So this proves that he doesn’t just believe in falling in love with someone because of there looks.
