The problem of men and women not being equal can be traced back to the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all men are created equal. There was no mention of women being equal, only men.

        Women have always been a minority compared to men in American society. This occurrence is not only found in the US, but in other countries as well. In other words, inequality between men and women started with the Declaration of Independence. Overall, more time is needed (there needs to be more cultural and religious changes) in order for women to be completely equal as men;due to history, stereotypes, and culture women have a hard time being recognized as an equal.

        The problem of men and women not being equal can be traced back to the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all men are created equal. There was no mention of women being equal, only men. At the time of the drafting of the document, the men had all the power. The document was even drafted by a man (Thomas Jefferson). “These abuses have continued because, for too long, the history of women has been a history of silence. Even today, there are those who are trying to silence our words (Source B).” Women were confined to the home to take care of the housekeeping duties. Therefore, women were forbidden and restricted from leaving the house to work and  “make history.”

        Common stereotypes of men and women have roamed in this society for too long and, therefore, almost impossible to get rid of. For example, toys that are targeted at boys include trucks, blocks, guns, action figures, and soldiers; and toys that are targeted at girls include dolls, kitchen utensils, and doll houses. Moreover, boys are raised to be aggressive, tough, and daring and girls are raised to be emotional, sweet, sensitive, and subordinate. Furthermore, the pattern continues on through marriage.
