Whilst carrying out this task, my role was to go to forms in year 6, to tell them about the hamper collection, I went to these to forms with a one of my group member everyday for a week at registration time.
After decorating the boxes we had to get a list of senior citizens who would appreciate receiving the gift boxes from us. We decided to do this by asking family and friends firstly and then put a message on the bulletin board asking all students to name of someone. The response we received was excellent as we very quickly had 33 names to go with our hampers, which we had collected.
From here we organised the booking of the school bus for two days to deliver the hampers the hampers and several of us took part in delivering the hampers. It was a very moving experience to see the expressions and gratitude of many of our senior citizens we learned a valuable lesson about the joy of doing something for nothing.
After we returned from the Christmas holidays we were pleased to receive letter from some of the elderly who received hampers, this made our efforts worth wile and we were very glad we had chosen to do this activity. We learned a lot from it, we learned that any project needs planning and organisation, it needs co-operation so everyone knows what their task is. We believe by doing this project we may encourage others in the school to stop and think about those who need help and hopefully do something for them. We hope that students will follow our example and we know that it has already had a positive effect on others.
During the task, we ran out of time on many occasions for our tasks. These problems mainly occurred because of lack of resources that we required. However, with a little extra time delay, we got everything completed in the end.
If we did this project again I would consider time-management, as we needed more time to plan and organise such a huge task. Hopefully some of us will take our ideas into our communities as we get older and try to make a difference. I will certainly try to do something else in the local area. The experience was valuable and taught how to get help from different bodies.
I enjoyed taking part in this project a lot even though I had to spend some of my free time going to other classes to tell them about the hampers. I also enjoyed working in a group as we all got on well, and we all listened to other people’s ideas and therefore made the project better, whilst working in a group we did not argue either.
From this task, I learnt that even elderly people need to be happy as they may be very vulnerable and alone especially in the holiday season. Families celebrate together and unfortunately some people do not have the luxury for that. Because of this, I think that everyone should have something to look forward to during time of joy.
