Introduction

Methodology My coursework is set in Southend-on-Sea is in the county of Essex, in South-East England, on the north bank of the Thames estuary. For my coursework I went to the coast of Essex and did some research on my computer about the area. I used primary data and secondary data. For my primary data I went to Southend-on-Sea and asked people questionnaires about their trip to the coast. My questionnaire included questions about where they came from, why they came and what they liked about the area. I stood at two ends of the town. First I stood at the furthest away from the beach end on the High Street and then I did another on the beach front. I did this so I got a range of recording. I got 50 from one end and 50 from the other end. I did my questionnaires at the two marked points on my map below. The questions on my questionnaires were chosen for certain reasons. My first question was 'What was your main purpose here today?' ...read more.

As my last question I asked them to give me a score between 1 and 5 to say how good aspects of Southend-on-sea area. I split these into shopping, beach and general facilities. I did my questionnaire all between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. so that I could get a range of people when it was most busy. For my primary data I have also done a street quality survey where I have given a mark from 0 to 3 depending how good the streets were. I also did a service count. The last thing I had decided to do in for my primary data was to do a people count and a traffic count. I counted for 5 minutes for each thing. I stood in one place for both my traffic counts and people count so that it was fair. I also measured the weather over the week that I did my counting and surveys. I spent as long as it took for me to collect all my data and spent most of the day there. ...read more.

Conclusion

I looked at books at home and in the library. As well as measuring the weather over the week I also looked for some weather charts done by the council. I have measured some things such as the weather over a week so that I can get a general idea of the weather at the time and also because the weather before will affect weather people will go out the next day or not. but have also done some sampling such as my questionnaires by only asking 100 people over 1 day. For my coursework the question I decided to look for "Are people more likely to come to Southend-on-sea because of the environment or the facilities?" because I think it would be very interesting to see what reasons people go to coasts. By environment I meant things such as the 7 mile long beach and the all round very good weather and when I say facilities I mean things such as the shops, sailing clubs and numerous activity centres not to forget the newly built pier complex. I have also put in blank copies of my service count and people count sheets. I have also put in a copy of my questionnaire. ...read more.
