    The wrekin is the remains of the ancient volcanoes. This picture shows two mountains standing next to the sea, the arrow pointing down into the sea is meant to show the sediments of the mountains going into the sea. The way, in which I feel I could explain this erosion is through millions of years of tough weather conditions of wind and rain, which is normally the case for rock erosion.

    There are many characteristic features of a limestone landscape both on the surface and underground that are the product of weathering. The main weathering processes are carbonation, in which rainfall that acts as carbonic acid reacts with the limestone to form carbon dioxide. This leads to solution, which is a form of erosion in which materials are dissolved into water. Limestones dissolve very easily which contrasts significantly to granite, which contains quartz that dissolves at an exceptionally slow rate. Chelation is another weathering process that involves the organic matter of plants.

    Erosion and weathering can break down metamorphic rocks to form sediment, which can be compacted into sedimentary rock. Igneous Rock Igneous rocks are formed from the molten liquid minerals that lie below the earth's crust. They're formed from magma that cools beneath the earth's surface or from lava that cools upon the earth's surface. These two methods of igneous rock formation are known as intrusive and extrusive, respectively. Intrusive igneous formations can be forced to the surface of the earth where they can exist as masses of rock known as plutons. The largest types of exposed plutons are called batholiths.

    The calcium hydrogen carbonate solution in the underground water is not a very stable substance. Often a steady drip from the ceiling of a cavern will allow the solution to decompose back into solid calcium carbonate. This solid slowly forms stalactites. They grow at a rate of 1cm every 100years. * Biological weathering - this is caused by plant roots in cracks. Plants push their roots through cracks in rocks and as roots grow they gradually push rocks apart. All weathering breaks rocks into smaller fragments.

  5. Experiment to determine soil texture by touch and physical analysis

    The amount of water in the soil sample will determine the percentage of moisture. With the moisture percentage, we can calculate the bulk density. In general, we can then determine the soil texture with both the feel method and the hydrometer method. Both the method and material can be found in the Sample Lab Manual on pages 15-21. Results: The soil texture allowed us to discover the true elements in the soil between our hands. The gritty feel reinforced the existence of sand.
