THE CARAJAS PROJECT A GREAT SUCCESS
The Carajas Project was launched in 1985 in the state of Para in the north-eastern part of brazil. The area covered b the scheme is larger than the UK and France combined. Today, it is the backbone of the economic and social development of a large area in the north east of Brazil. At Carajas, about 45 million tonnes of iron ore is processed annually, as well as large quantities of manganese and of gold. It is also producing copper, bauxite and other metals. This is all controlled by an environment policy that strives to conserve the Amazonian eco-systems. As shown in the map above, Roads have been built, the main one being the Trans Amazonian Highway.
