Describe three barriers that individuals with disability may experience.

The first of these barriers I am going to look at in detail is discrimination. By this I mean that individuals with disabilities are often treated as less human than those who do not have a disability. This can be obviously negative such as people at school insulting and bullying disabled people because they are unable to do some of the things that other school children can e.g. often are not able to participate in some sports, or they may be bullied because they behave and understand things differently from everyone else. However the way they are discriminated against is not always this obvious.

They can also be discriminated against by people smothering them too much. For example when someone insists on helping them with everything. This is because by helping them with everything they are still being treated as if they are something less than human. Furthermore they are being treated as obviously different and in doing so it can also make them offended and lose confidence in the things they are capable of doing themselves.

Another barrier for disabled individuals I will be discussing is the barrier of employment. This is a barrier because depending on the level and nature of their disability, many people who are disabled are not employed. This can be a barrier for them because it means they cannot achieve their own dreams and goals in life that might have been linked to their career. Also it employment may be a barrier for them even if they do get a job as they may have to be supervised a lot of the time. This would possibly make them feel uncomfortable and as if they are not trustworthy enough to do the job themselves.

The last barrier I will discuss is financial barriers. This is a barrier because although those who are disabled receive benefits from the government they will still probably not be earning as much as they would if they had a job. And as it is difficult for people with disabilities to get a job, they would probably be surviving off this benefit alone. Although these benefits are enough for them to live off they may not be able to afford all the luxuries that they want. Also they may also because of this think they have lost their independence as they are surviving off money the government gives them rather than their own cash, and so it can cause them to be upset.
