D1 – Evaluate own communication skills in terms of developing relationships with children.

At my placement overall I found that I could communicate quite well with children. I felt that whatever I wanted to say to the children they could understand me and would listen to me.

0-1 – I found it easy to talk to the child and interact with it however I found it too hard to understand what the child was saying back to me or if they wanted something I thought it was quite hard because they would speak in babble and I would have to rely on hand gestures to make out what they wanted or not. I would also use hand gesture myself to communicate with them because at times they couldn’t understand me either. As a child of this age isn’t very cognitively or intellectually developed it would obviously be hard to understand. To improve I would practice and learn some more hand gestures.

1-3 - Communicating with the children was a bit of a challenge when it came to this age group because some of the times they were really active and hyper and wouldn’t sit down to listen to what you had to say, so I found it harder to try to communicate with them. Next time I will get down to the child’s level and use hand gestures and different body postures to try to communicate with the child so they can understand and more likely to communicate back to me. Next time I will get down to the child’s level and use hand gestures and different body postures to try to communicate with the child so they can understand and more likely to communicate back to me. However when they wanted something they were good at communicating with me so I would give them what they wanted.

5-8 - It was easy to communicate with children of this age this was because they were now fully able to understand anything I said to them and they would undertake any instructions I gave them properly as they could understand what I told them. They had a wide range of vocabulary so they could understand a lot more things now. It was hard to talk to a child of this age when they were distressed as they would scream a lot still. Also some children found it hard opening up to an adult and telling them what was wrong so they would be withdrawn from the rest of the group. But then I would approach them and get down to their level and ask them what was wrong and then they would tell me, but it was hard work in getting them to open up. Next time I will give a withdrawn child a gentler approach and try to get them to come up to me instead of me going up to them.
