The DVD Crossing the line was both moving and inspirational. It helped develop a clear understanding of the need for emotional connection to a community which enables a greater understanding of experiences while highlighting the need for distance which is required for self-preservation and perspective. It was surprising to witness how quickly the boundaries were breached in establishing personal relationship within the indigenous community. Further I was shocked at the speed at which authorities removed the students from the community. This was done to protect both the community and the students.

Although there is need for limited emotional involvement for appropriate medical care it is also essential to maintain distance to protect and preserve one’s self and the community.  This movie clearly depicted the student’s inability to maintain distance while establishing a trust based rapport with the community. This jeopardized the wellbeing of the students as well as the indigenous community as well as the families involved.
