Why do some young people continue to smoke when they are aware of the dangers?

        Firstly I am going to talk about the history of smoking and what smoking is. Smoking was first brought to the UK around 500 years ago in the early 16th Century. Back then many people did not know the dangers of smoking and what damage it does to your health. In the early 20th Century smoking became very popular and the cigarettes were being produced in large numbers. When time went on people started to be aware of the dangers cigarettes were doing to them, so anti smoking campaigns started in the 1980’s. When cigarettes companies realised the drop in smoking they started targeting young people and poorer, less educated countries, which are not aware of the danger.

        Now I will talk about cigarettes and what they are. Cigarettes are made from dried tobacco leaves. The tobacco is grown in many countries like China, United States of America, Brazil and India. When the leaves are dried they are treated with chemicals and then rolled up in paper ready to smoke. There are around 4000 highly poisonous chemicals in cigarettes and over 60 are cancer causing. One poisonous chemical is nicotine. Nicotine is a very powerful drug, which is found in cigarettes. It causes a rise in blood pressure and makes your heart beat faster. It can even change your appearance. Your teeth, tongue and fingers can turn yellow thanks to nicotine.

        Next I will say why I think people start to smoke. On average people start smoking when they are younger. This may be because they think it’s smart or they want to look big in front of their friends or maybe they just want to look older. Another reason is peer group pressure. For example, if a large group of friends smoked and they offer you a cigarette, it would be hard to say no if you wanted to fit in. Advertising is also a large influence for why people smoke.
