Question: Examine the view that popular definitions of the family are dominated by a traditional nuclear family deal.

In this essay I will be examining the traditional nuclear family then contrasting it with what people believe is a UN functional family.

A nuclear family is a man and a woman, living together with their children, co-operating economically and maintaining a sexual relationship. Parsons believes that this is the way every family should be because they are sociably correct. Other theorist that have been inspired by Parsons have revered to this being the warm bath theory, when everything is relaxed, the male goes of to work and when he comes home the wife treats him good so he is able to relax. Hints of nuclear families are everywhere today, in the media and advertisements and even in popular literature, nuclear families are seen everywhere because that is what a lot of people think all families aspire to be. The problem with this is that is very ideologist and misleading, e.g. Parson’s theory believes that the family is more functional that it actually is.

  • In 2003/4, one in six adults aged 16 and over lived alone in Great Britain
  • In spring ...
