Act one scene six-this scene the play has gone back in time and the men are discussing weather or not a play would be a good idea. Phillip, Ralph and reverend Johnson are all for the play and think it would make the convicts act and behave like civilized people, Ralph said, “it could change the nature of our little society and Phillips ses “the theatre is an expression for civilization”. Tech and Ross are against the idea, we see the hate Ross has for the convicts in this scene when he talks about them being treated like animals and how they should be treated no better than slaves. At the end of the play the men have decided the play will be put on, we see how unhappy Major Ross is and Johnston ses “major Ross will never forgive you Ralph”
Act one scene seven- in this scene we see the relationship between Harry and Duckling, Duckling describes Harry as being over protective and not given her any time with out being watched by him, also in this scene Dabby puts the point across about how she would love to be in the play, Harry makes up for being over protective and allows Duckling to be in the play, but he still ses he will come to watch her rehersals so he is not being completely friendly.
Act one scene eight-this is the scene when Dabby and Mary are learning there lines, Dabby then trys to convince Mary to get with Ralph and we see that she likes him but doesn’t know what to do and Dabbys answer is to have sex with him. Then liz morden comes in and a fight occurs between herself and Dabby. The fight is interrupted by Ketch and we see the hate the convicts have towards him, we learn that this is because he is the hangman and the convicts feel like he has betrayed them by taking the job instead of being hung himself. They insult him until he leaves. They cal him names like “crap merchant” and “roper”
Act one scene nine-in this scene we see Ralph writing in his diary to about how much he misses his wife even though we know he likes Mary, this is just emphazing that Ralph is a good man and how he knows what he is doing is wrong and that if he cant do the right thing how can he expect the convicts to. Then ketch enters and talks about his hate for being a hangman and how he just wants to be liked and forgiven by god, this shows that the convicts do have morals because he cares about being forgiven, then he asks Ralph if he can be in the play.
Act one scene ten-in this scene Mary is copying her lines when John Wisehammer comes in and trys showing off to her by using lots of intellectual words, he ses “you have a nice hand” to try and chat her up but Mary just ignores him, this is showing the like she has for Ralph Clarke.
Act one scene eleven-this scene is about the convicts rehearsing the play for the first time, we see complete mayhem and the point that maybe the play wasn’t such a good idea, from the beginning know one is happy because Ketch is aloud in the play and none of the convicts like him, then by the end of the scene know one is communicating in a civil way and Ross and Campbell interrupt the rehearsal to tell Liz that she will be hanged for helping Kable to escape.
Act two scene one-in this seen we see a very emotional side of Liz, she gives a monologue about how her parents were never there for her and how bad growing up was, being a prostitute and having know one to want her. Then Wisehammer , Liz, Arscott and Ceasar are all tied together because they tried to escape or tried helping each other escape, they talk about there homes and how they all wish they could go back to there countries, but Liz is convinced they will never get home.
Act Two Scene Two-This is a scene of hope, Ralp goes to talk to Phillip about how terrible the play is going and that none of his cat are able to rehearse because they are all chained to one another, Phillip then convinces Ralph that he must not be afraid and that he can make the play a success, Ralph leaves the scene feeling confident and happy about the play.
Act Two scene Three-IN this scene we see Harry Brewer near the end of his tether, he is seeing all the ghost of the people he had killed, they are tormenting him saying that his beloved Duckling is on the beach with Handy Baker, after screams of help Duckling rushes on and tells Harry it was a dream but he tells her he is seeing ghosts, he starts to believe she really was with the ghost of Handy.
Act two scene four-In this scene we hear from the Aborigines again, he talks about how the English have come over and disturbed their home. He ses “this is a dream no one wants” this is a significant piece in the text because it is saying how these people have come over from a foreign land and ruined there lives and they have know control over it.
Act two scene five-This is a very powerful scene in the play, this is the second rehearsal and things are going much better, but then Ross and Campbell enter and start bullying all the characters, they make Sideway show the convicts his back and how scared it is because of all the lashes he has received, they call Dabby on to the stage and make her go down on her hands and knees and tell her to bark like a dog just to humiliate her. The rest off the characters try to ignore Ross and Campbell and continue acting but all they can hear are the screams of pain coming from Arscott, this becomes to much for Liz and even though she trys she breaks down.
Act two scene six-In this scene Ketch is trying to measure Liz but she refuses to stand up for him, after he makes her stand up Harry starts talking in his victims voices about the pain of hanging, they tell Liz she was wrong for taking the food but she tells the truth… it wasn’t her. Harry thinks she’s lying and gets angry and then has a heart attack and drops down dead.
Act two scene seven-This scene starts with the Aborigine, he is now desperate to get rid of the people who have infected his home, he ses “how can we satisfy them?” this means he’s actually willing to help them just so they will leave, desperation. Then the convicts are practicing their lines and Dabby shows her understanding and enjoyment of the play by saying how certain lines reflect different meanings with in the play.
Act two scene eight- In this scene we now see Ducklings Desperation, she sat next to Harry who is unconscious, she keeps on saying “if you live” over and over again, this is because she does not want to be alone again, this is reflecting on how lonely the life of a convict can be, you can be surrounded by people all day and night but you never feel loved. By the end of this scene Harry is dead and Duckling cries out “How can you do this to me” she is alone again.
Act two scene nine-Mary is practicing her lines when Ralph comes in and starts saying the lines with her, they feel close and use the play as an excuse to kiss, the passion that has built up all through the play is finally released in this scene and they begin to make love.
Act two scene ten- In this scene all the officers are discussing weather they should hang Liz or not, Ross and Collins think that because she wont speak or protest her innocence then she must be guilty but he other officers aren’t to sure, Phillips ses “I do not want to hang the first innocent woman”. They then bring Liz in and she decides to tell them she is innocent, she is freed from being hung and is very thankful towards Phillip and Ralph and gets a new inspiration, she ses “Your excellency, I will endeavor to speak Mr. Farquars lines with the elegance and clarity their own worth commands.” just from this one line we can see how the play has changed Liz, even in her speech she has completely changed, she is now speaking like a very respectable lady.
Act two scene ten- at the beginning of this scene the Aborigine talks about how has chicken pox and how this is down to the English, how these innocent people were living their lives and then they came over and have destroyed everything for them, then Dabby tells the convicts she has been kicked out of Harry’s tent and burst into tears, she ses how she will still perform the play though. They all talk about wanting to do more theatre work after the play and Wisehammer tells them he is starting up his own theatre company and they can all be in it, they all have dreams, they all have hope. They all then begin to become nervous a but all support each other into going out and performing the play. They all have each other.
