A Comparison of the D-day landings in the films ‘Saving Private Ryan’ directed by S.Speilberg and ‘The Longest Day’ by D.Zanuck.

To start with I am going to show how the two themes of the films are exactly the same. They both reconstruct the ‘D-day’ landings of Normandy, which happened 6th June 1944.

    Although the accounts have the same theme they had totally different filming styles. In ‘The Longest Day’ the director D.Zanuck chose to have the camera still creating a less imaginative effect. In ‘Saving Private Ryan’ the camera moves up and down and left to right with the action giving us a sense of panic and not knowing where to look next. Also he moves the camera with a German soldiers view leaving us with the effect of the viewer being the German. Speilberg does this deliberately to give the audience a 3d realistic view of what the soldiers were feeling and seeing at the time.

    ‘The Longest Day’ was released in 1962 and ‘Saving Private Ryan’ was released in 1998. This means that Speilberg had much newer and advanced technology.

The colour used in the two films are different Spielberg uses a lot of gore. He did this by staining the sea red with the effect of it being blood. Also a lot of shooting of men takes place with extreme detail. In ‘The Longest Day’ the only colour used was black and white.
