In this piece of coursework I will be writing an essay about the development of the music industry. I will also be including main events and the ‘Global Big Six’ record companies, for example Sony, Philips and etc.

Development of the music technology started in 1877 when the first recording of the human voice (“Mary had a little lamb”) was done by Thomas Edison who was an American inventor.

In 1920 Thomas Edison invented the Radio, which was a great invention because then people could listen to music in their own homes.

Stefan Kudelski Built the first self-contained tape recorder, with wind up motor in 1951.

MTV goes on the air running around the clock music videos in 1981.

In 1988 CDs outsell vinyl records for the first time in music history.

I have chosen these events because they are the events which had the biggest impacts in the music industry, for example if Thomas Edison didn’t invent the voice recorder, the music industry would have not started until a later date. Also the internet was a major event because it allows people to download any songs they want, so they would not have to buy albums for only one song they want from it.

The ‘Global Big Six’ record companies are:

  • Philips – who owns Polygram, ...
