How I use ICT

Whether we like it or not, ICT and technology has a huge impact upon all of our lives, whether in business or our personal lives.

The technology that is incorporated in everyday domestic appliances is enormous.  The majority of homes have telephones, televisions, microwaves other kitchen appliances.  These all have macro processors to control their function.

Almost every home nowadays has a fridge or a fridge freezer.  Macro processors and thermostats control the temperature of the fridge freezer.  Before these inventions, food could not be kept for any significant period of time.  Disease and illness, due to the consumption of rotten food, was very common.

In my house I have access to digital television.  The menu system and programming guides that are built into the system allow me to select the programmes that I want to view with ease.  Within my system I can interactively play games and look at the latest news and sport headlines.  Without this technology this information was not readily available.

I have a personal computer at home.  This has many applications available to me.  I use Word to produce documents, such as this.  Use of this technology allows me to concentrate on the content of this essay rather than writing it out.  Also, the use of the computer allows me to make corrections and changes to the work easily without having to write it all out again.  Access to the internet from my personal computer makes available an enormous amount of information.  It also allows me to connect with my teachers and friends.  I am able to send and receive information from them that previously I would have had to send by post or deliver personally.  The cost saving to me in postage and time is immense.  So my personal computer is used for educational, social and personal enjoyment.

A huge amount of money and research nowadays is being put into mobile telephones.  Like most of my friends, I have a mobile phone.  The uses of this phone are immense.  It is not simply a device for talking to other people.  I am able to store important dates on the calendar, I can take photographs and I can even set alarms to remind me of important events.  All of these facilities help me to order and control my life.  I can communicate with my friends and parents when I need a lift or help with homework.  I don’t forget important dates and times.  The saving to me in organising my time and allowing me to contact friends is significant.

I have a microwave in my house like many other people.  A microwave, as with other kitchen appliances, has resulted in a great deal of time saving.  Food that previously took hours to cook can now be prepared in minutes.  One of the major benefits is the ability to safely defrost food.  Before the invention of the microwave, food that was frozen had to be left for many hours overnight to defrost before it could be safely cooked.  Because we can now defrost food safely with speed, food doesn’t have to be left overnight where it can be contaminated by the atmosphere and other bacteria.  It is also true to say that other types of food that previously couldn’t be prepared in an economic timeframe can now be prepared.  These foodstuffs are usually healthier than others.  So that the advent of this technology has not only given rise to benefit in time saving but there is also a great health benefit.

Many people use ICT in their modern lives for enjoyment. We can use all of these things for Personal use, Social use and also for educational use.  In the majority of homes they will have the basic technologies, telephones, televisions, kitchen machinery; all appear a lot in civilised homes these days.

Most people would say that they want to keep up to date with news and latest things and also to watch enjoyable programmes, search the internet and a lot of various other types of enjoyment, social, personal and lastly for educational usage.  Here is a list of what technologies that my family and I use in our home, and on most of these technologies I have listed how I use them personally, socially and lastly educationally.

I use a Fridge-freezer in my home to store food and to keep my food cool or frozen for my own enjoyment and needs, so that the food that I want or need, I can have.  I can just take it out of the fridge/freezer whenever I want to eat something or to have a cool refreshing drink.  This can keep my food preserved and cold for my satisfaction and enjoyment.  This can keep all of the food that I need to keep healthy and fit.  I use this personally.  I also have a mini-fridge in the comfit of my own room.  This is very useful to me because whenever I’m tired and cannot go downstairs to the fridge I can get a drink or a snack out of my fridge.  Also when I wake up or wake up in the night gasping of thirst I can have a drink.  This is good because I would normally have to go downstairs to get a drink or snack but with this clever little bit of technology I can stay in my room and have a drink without turning all the lights on and making a noise going down the stairs and opening and closing the fridge and waking up the rest of my family.  It is also good because then I can have drinks of my own that the rest of my family cannot touch as they would in the shared refrigerator.

I use a Digital TV for my own enjoyment purposes and also social and educational reasons.  A digital television is much better than a normal television because instead of having one channel like on a normal television you can have ten more than on a normal one.  I like to watch some programs on the TV, and to search for things on it and to also play interactive games on the TV.  A digital TV is different to a normal television by the digital TV has waves sent to the digital box, it is sent in 0’s and 1’s.  This ...
