  9. The power of the mass media has been grossly overstated.

People can have access to information in greater quantity and quality as opposed to what the daily tabloid or newspaper can offer. We also no longer need to be subjected to television or radio schedules in order to access the information. Given such luxuries that new media offers, we thus have even more access to information as compared to the past. Hence the media's influence as an information network has surged and its power is not grossly overstated. Just take for example how periodicals such as Newsweek, or The Economist or newspapers such as The Straits Times or The New York Times, or even entertainment outlets such as MTV have their own websites that promote their content.

Generalised exchange includes at least three actors, who benefit indirectly, i.e. gives to one actor and receives from another. Complex exchange is "a system of mutual relationships between at least three parties", and is a web or interconnecting restricted and generalised exchanges (Bagozzi 1975: pp. 33). Bagozzi's theory gave a theoretical framework that could be applied to all situations to help identify the key actors within the exchange. A disadvantage of Bagozzi's theory being that, identifying the actors and what is being exchanged was always difficult, as this would be difficult for each transaction, and may be unforeseen.

Also everything is all in one place, which means that you wouldn't have to go from library to library or even country to country to get the information you would need, it's all contained together and all you need to do is go on one of the many sites to find what you were looking for. For example while using the Old Bailey database I found it relatively simple to find specific cases with many different offences, if I wanted to find out this without using the internet I would have to go all the way in to London to only find that they were probably not going to let me look at the original copies.

  19. Terrorism is the unconventional use of violence for political gain.

Media plays a significant role in realization of such actions. It's some kind of war, the purpose of which is to propagandize some ideas: political, cultural, religious, etc. One of the most important things for terrorists, I believe, is not the principle of pure violence, but a desire to put some thought into the minds of people, and visible violence is only a way to do it, because it always draws the people's attention and, of course the media's one. So, in this way we come to the point that actually terrorists promote their ideas through the media and neither the journalists nor the audience can even always realize it.

A, Online Communities vs. Classical Communities, http://spaz.ca/aaron/school/online.html, Accessed 10th Nov 2005) In an online, virtual community we are free from the fear of a physical attack, and it would prove very difficult to steal a person's car via the Internet. It is for this reason joining a virtual community can be a very uplifting and liberating experience for people. In an online community we can discuss and share our views with others from the safety and comfort of our homes without fear of a physical or oral disagreement, which is an unsettling experience for anyone in a real-life community.

Both sites featured both internal and external links that were accurate and in line with the goal of the site. The Green Landscape with Native Plants site however did have two external links that did not connect on the other end. Both of these sites comply with this criterion and are both very good sites for accurate information.

  • Outline and discuss the view that media institutions are expanding and becoming more popular.

"In conclusion, I believe that the media institution is gaining power and will come to eventually directing and determining the culture of society rather than respond to or reflect society culture. Overall sociologist believe that the mass media is increasingly becoming more popular as the term 'meditation' describes this process of mass recognition. The media has begun to replace our local knowledge and awareness. This suggests that the media has become very popular and important in society lives due to the fact that they have replaced community-based forms of social and cultural life. Jamaal Channer"

  • Compare two search engines on the internet.

"In conclusion, I believe that 'Ask Jeeves' did a slightly better job at finding a Prom dress maker in the UK, because the site was a lot more user-friendly. It was less crowded on the page, unlike 'Yahoo!'. 'Ask Jeeves' didn't come up with the most results, but the results I did get were relevant to my search. 'Ask Jeeves' also gave other related searches, which you could click on, and get even more results. 'Yahoo!' was more funky, and for younger people who have a sound knowledge of the internet, whereas 'Ask Jeeves' is for a wider audience. However, both search engines were a pleasure to use, and they both did an excellent job at finding what I was looking for."

  • Assess the view that women are stereotyped and symbolically annihilated in the media.

"After looking at these 3 media types, I can say the women are indeed stereotyped and symbolically annihilated within them. All of the 3 medias show in ideal image of women; slim, attractive and fashionable, but this raises a question - does the media create the people in society or do the people in society create what goes into the media? I think that it is the people who create what goes into the media, because things that get printed or shown are things that people in society want to see. In conclusion, you can also look at the feminist view of the media to try to see if women are stereotyped and symbolically annihilated. Liberal feminists believe that journalists have learnt to portray women in a particular way, usually classless and family based. Radical feminists see men as the enemy. Men hold dominant positions in the media and they consciously manipulate the content for their own benefit, and to the detriment of women Finally, socialist feminists blame the capitalist structure for the disadvantaged position of women in society and that the role of the media is to sustain the capitalist system and the role of women within it."
