noticed the effect this period through her students and had decided to take action. The 1960’s was seen to be a period of bad influence by many people especially the older generation. The new sudden change during the 60’s seemed to go against the older generation as traditional ideas were being ignored. Mrs. Mary Whitehouse is disappointed about the absence of traditional TV program’s which consist of, Christian beliefs and cultural work. She also mentions in the article that authors that write play about “purpose and hope” for the Christian faith find it difficult to get their work accepted by the BBC. From this Mrs. Mary Whitehouse is prepared to raise a campaign to support her ideas of what the BBC should show. She had published her ideas in the Daily mail which was a conservative paper which would promote her views. The BBC which she tied to clean up consisted of prgrammes such as Steptoe and son which sowed poverty and teenage pregnancies, Coronation Street which showed sex before marriage. These programmes all go against the Christian religion and in her view had to be stopped. This priod was seen as a bad influence as illegitimate births rose from 5.8% in 1960’s and divorces also rose. Also in 1967 the morning after pill had been invented and this had angered Christians as it is seen to them as abortion. However many of these programmes that the BBC had shown such as coronation street were very popular among the public as it showed real life, 60% of the public watched 4 hours of TV a night which proves they had liked this realistic TV as people wanted to see the conditions they lived in like poverty. Mrs. Mary Whitehouse and the Daily mail were just a minority, they were right winged conservatives who were alarmed at what they considered to be rude and unchristian. Divorces did rise but to 1 in 10 but 9 out of 10 were successful. Even though illegitimate births rose by 8.2% in the 1970’s it was still a minority and 91.8% of teenagers weren’t having babies. Source G is a description of a singer named Janis Joplin which was taken from her biography in the 1990’s, it describes her as a rebellious teenager growing up in this time of change. It describes her as a brilliant singer but a drug abuser and that she had died of an overdose. Janis had a bad background this was because as a teenager it was disappointing to be seen by the older generation signing nightclubs and taking drugs which is the reason for her death. This would have been a bad influence to the public and her fans. The 60’s were seen as a bad influence as the generation before were seen as more reserved and behaved which Janis Joplin did not reflect these factors as she was a drug abuser. The 60’s can be seen as a bad influence as Janis and a the very popular Jimmy Hendrix died of drugs and this to there teenage fans would be a bad influence. Also many other bands and singers such as the Rolling Stones and the beatles wrote about the pleasures of drugs examples of these would be Brown sugaand LSD would be seen as a bad influence. However during the sixties not all was bad as full time students had risen and not everyone during that age had taken drugs. !967 only 2.500 people were persecuted for drugs so this shows that the 1960’s was not a bad influence for many. The 60’s did however consist of many good Christian pop stars that were very anti drugs they were people like Cliff Richard and Cilla Black.
