Discuss research into the factors associated         with marriage including a consideration of cultural differences.

Marriage can have both positive and negative effects on the involved couple. This can be both physical and mental with responses such as related illnesses to increased life expectancy.  

Research was done by Davis, which found psychological disorders occurring for the first time in people that were engaged to be married. The disorders, which were present, were anxiety and depression although they improved when the marriage took place or was cancelled. Davis concluded that it was the decision to get married that caused the stress but not the process of marriage.

        The above research does not show that marriage actually causes stress but says that it is the decision that creates the anxiety and depression. Gove (1979) conducted research into married and single peoples mental health. He found that married people actually have a much lower rate of mental disorders than single people of the same age. Davis concluded that it is the actual decision to get married that causes the psychological disorders.
