QUESTION 3:

To some people the 1960s were the best of times; to others it was a period when many things went wrong in society. Why do people have such different ideas about the 1960s?

The 1960s was an era that saw a cataclysmic change within the attitudes and views of society. The fact that so much changed and so many different things happened cause people, when reflecting back on the decade to pick out 'the best of times' and 'the worst of times'. We know that the 1960's, were a very long and revolutionary decade, and throughout this essay I shall explore multiple elements of the 60's and consider why some hated and some loved the 1960's.

When asking people, what they disliked and liked about the 1960's, most people would say positive things about the era. These people who speak positively of the era were most probably teenagers at the time. But this doesn't mean to say that older people hated the 1960's. It is just individual aspects of the era, such as the 'Teddy Boys', which causes some people to speak negatively of this decade.

Older people disliked radical changes because they were more set in their ways. The older generation disliked the 60s because it was a time of new inventions, new behaviour amongst youngsters and role models, and in the eyes of the older generation these role models, were seen as too influential in a negative way. Their influence was the key to the development of the teenager. But role models weren't the only reason that the '1960s teenager' came about. New inventions such as the 'scooter' and new places for youngsters to socialise ('bowling alleys') were introduced; these were among a range of new things that changed behaviour, lives etc. When most people ask an older person about the 1960s, the majority of replies are negative. But there were also positive events/actions that took place; events such as England winning the 1966 world cup, the 'Beatles', receiving an MBE each from the Queen etc.

Most, older people liked the Beatles. This was because, even though they were young and very popular with boys and girls, the older generation found that the Beatles were respectable and very talented. The Beatles wore suits and dressed very smartly, this was because their manager, Brian Epstein demanded that they did so. This demand came about due to the thinking of their manager. His thinking was very effective; because older people started to give them respect unlike the Rolling Stones who wore want they wanted.

Unlike Brian Epstein, the Rolling Stones manager, whose name was ...
