Considering the fact that the United States was founded on the principle of religious freedom, it is only appropriate that religion has been very influential and also controversial to this day. Freedom of religion has generated a diversity of religions from all over the world in one country. As the number of regularly practiced religions increased in the country so did the number of cases in the court rooms. Some popular topics of the cases include prayers in public schools to United States government providing financial support to church related organizations. The "wall of separation" between church and state was not created for the government to avoid and ignore those who are affiliated to religious organizations. There should be a limit to how much the government should support any religion rather than prohibiting any kind of assistance to any religious organizations.

The First Amendment has a great importance to the American citizens for the fact that it expresses our freedom of religion. Presently, as it has been in the past, there have been serious concerns about issues regarding to the church and the state dealing predominantly with the First Amendment and how Americans respond to this amendment. Throughout history, there have been many court cases dealing with the separation of church and state. The reasons for these issues to arise come primarily from misinterpretation of the First Amendment. There has been much confusion to the pubic of the interpretation of the First Amendment. The First Amendment was suited to administer freedom of religion to the citizens. It allows an individual to choose a specific religion with no restrictions by the government. The focus of the First Amendment was for the government to stay neutral in regards to religions and not favor one religion over another or even a religion over a non religious group. It has been extremely difficult over the years for the Supreme Court to satisfy each religious group.

Controversies emerge frequently surrounding the general issues of the First Amendment. Clashing of the first two clauses of the First Amendment create overlapping conflicts. The Establishment Clause, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," prohibits the government from involvement with any religious activities. Whereas the Free Exercise Clause, "prohibiting the free exercise there of," restricts the government from banning or discouraging of religious practices and activities.
