ACCELERATORS

Introduction

Particle accelerators are used to study matter and energy. They accelerate charged particles through an electric field in an evacuated tube. The particles collide into a target or another particle. The collision point is in a detector, which records how the particles collide.

All accelerators use a strong magnetic field to move particles. They all have the same three main parts:

* A source of particles or ions

* A tube pumped to a vacuum

* A way of speeding up the particles.

The three main types are:

* cyclotron (spiral)

* synchrotron (circular)

* linear (linac)

Cyclotron

A cyclotron is a resonance accelerator. It has of two large dipole magnets which produce a semi-circular region of magnetic field.

An oscillating voltage is applied to produce an electric field across the gap between the 2 semicircles. Particles are injected into the magnetic field region. They go in a semicircular path until they reach the gap. Then the electric field in the gap accelerates the particles.

The particles have higher energy so follow a semicircular path with larger radius. The

Response to the question

The candidate has written a suitable introduction, they clearly state what a particle accelerator is, what it is used for and they have listed the topics they plan to cover. Though their response is limited, this is quite a short piece of writing and the information provided is rather brief which suggests a lack of understanding of the topic.

Level of analysis

The candidate has provided diagrams for each type of particle accelerator, this helps the reader understand how the accelerators work and is an interesting addition. Though I would advise that you write up a short bibliography to list the sources of any images your use. In addition to this, the candidate could have have improved this piece of writing by undergoing independent research, perhaps giving information on the large hadron collider at CERN. This would have shown enthusiasm for the topic and would make the essay more enjoyable to read. Finally there is no conclusion to this piece of writing, a good conclusion is essential, it summaries your key points and gives you the opportunity to leave the read with a good impression of your work.

Quality of writing

The candidate uses technical terms correctly and there are no real issues with either spelling or grammar. In addition to this the information is laid out clearly and is written in a coherent manner.
