I was taught that one could not have right not have a right that conflicts with the rights of others, therefore the claim that women have such a right is irrelevant. Consequently, the major debate amongst the opposing sides is the definition of life, or when human life begins. Pro-abortion debators say that only when a baby is born; it begins life as a human. The opposing pro-life view believes that human life begins at conception, when the egg is fertilized by the sperm. According to science, once the egg is fertilized every characteristic of a brand new being is existent. The color of their eyes, their hair, their sex, and so many other characteristics already exist. The only exception to abortion that should be considered is if the survival of the mother or baby in not guaranteed. If the mother or child has no chance of survival, an abortion should be an option for the pregnant woman.
Most uninformed people think that the majority of abortions are performed because the woman’s life is in danger, but that is not exactly the case. Fact is that ninety-three percent of all induced abortions are done for elective, nonmedical reasons. 1.4 million Women have abortions every year. This number is only going to increase. Therefore, abortion is a common occurrence. This helps prove that abortions aren’t only done for emergency purposes because this number is excessively too high. Of course, abortions are justified for many reasons. Seventy-nine percent of women have abortions because of the concern of how a baby would drastically change their lives or because they are having relationship problems or want to avoid being a single parent or cant afford the baby. Thirteen percent of abortions take place because of the health of the fetus, seven percent happen due to the health conditions of the mother, and one percent happen because of rape or incest (Johnston,Wm.). This means nearly eighty percent of the abortions are due to the convenience of the situation. Women know from the beginning what is inside of them. They know it is not just a group of cells.
Sometimes the health of the fetus is not life threatening. Some of the babies of conditions such as Down’s syndrome or Spina Bifida. Individuals with Down’s syndrome can function well with society. Thos with Spina bifida are considered to be intelligent. There are waiting lists of families who want to adopt seriously disabled babies with Down’s syndrome or Spina Bifida. Figuratively speaking, around eighty five to ninety percent or aborted babies are killed unnecessarily. There are other options such as adoption for these unwanted babies.
Consequently, abortions are performed at different stages in a woman’s pregnancy. This means that the fetus could be aborted at twenty three weeks or almost six weeks. According to The National Right to Life, The especially heinous performance of abortion between twenty to thirty two weeks of pregnancy is called partial birth abortion. In this procedure, in which the baby is still alive, a doctor induces labor synthetically. The baby is turned in the uterus so it is born in a feet first position. When all but the head of the baby is exposed, the doctor takes a scissor-like tool and punctures the skull. The baby’s brains are then suctioned out. Finally, the dead baby is taken out of the birth canal. Unfortunately this isn’t the only way or torture that they use to kill unborn babies.
There are many other abortion-slaughter techniques used today. Examples are the dilation and curettage (D&C), where a loop shaped steel knife is inserted and the child is cut into pieces. Also, there is the dilation and evacuation (E&C), where the doctor uses forceps with sharp metal jaws and tears the child apart, piece by piece. Usually, during these procedures, the head is hardened to bone and must be compressed or crushed in order to get it out.
These are horrible ways of just getting rid of a problem. If jamming a pair of scissors into a live baby’s head and watching have its brain sucked out is looked at as a normal thing when it comes to problems, then it should not be illegal to go and stab someone that has fired you, or degraded you, or made other looks down upon you. There is proof that a twenty two week old baby can survive. There are premature babies born everydays that still make it to live their long lives. In December of 1996, two parents were given first degree murder charges for fracturing the skull of their premature baby, which was forcefully born. There is not difference in that little baby and the innocent ones that are not given a chance to live their lives. This year, 1,190,000 babies will unnecessarily be aborted. We must not let anymore innocent babies be killed.
