Aim
To examine reasons for differential educational attainment of afro-Caribbean and Indian males at A-levels. The studies I have looked at give me reason to believe the rational explanation for these differential achievements are teachers don’t treat all students equally and that the nature and culture of family life is the cause of difference in attainment.
The reason for my action to do this content is because I attend a school that has predominantly Asian and afro-Caribbean students. I would also like to know weather teachers attitudes and behavior towards ethnic minorities has a diverse effect on those pupils.

Context

Nicholas Pyke did a study to see whether Afro-Caribbean boys fall behind in educational attainment. According to new studies afro-Caribbean boys produce poor scores in subjects like science. One authority did surveys on pupils from 15 secondary schools and found only 10% of afro-Caribbean students achieved 5 grades A-C at G.C.S.E (national average 43%). Only 7% attained G.C.S.E pass in mathematics. Based on 1995 G.C.S.E results Birmingham analysis found, 8.6% of afro-Caribbean boys achieved grades a-c in mathematics and 12.4% in science. 34.2% of Indian boys attained grade a-c in mathematics and 44.1% in science.

Cecile Wright did an ethnography study in 1992 of four multi racial schools. She found teachers unaware they perceived pupils from ethnic minorities differently to white children, yet they were committed to help and teach children equally in the education system. Wright found teachers assumed Asian children’s English language was poor so they were excluded from classroom discussions. Because of situations happening in classroom and the way teachers saw ethnic minority children, Asian students suffered isolation from the rest of class meaning Asian children performing poorly in the educational system.

Racism- personal attitude a person has towards another targeted ethnic group, the way they perceive a person because of e.g. their culture. This relates to my aim because it can show if teachers show signs of racism in classrooms.

Discrimination; when a person is treated differently because of e.g. there culture. This meets my aim because ...
