Something that has changed over the last 15 years are the attitudes of females, before this the priorities of women was to raise a family first before carrying out a career. As over the years more opportunities for women have become open, more women stay on for further education and want to start a career before thinking about a family. Before, jobs such as doctors and teachers were mostly male dominated and women were given jobs such as secretary and nurses. There are also more subjects introduced such as Drama and Dance, because there are more creative subjects- as the female uses the left side more than the male, meaning they then have an advantage in these subjects as the left side of the brain is the creative side, this may raise averages for females.
Another reason why males may not achieve as well as females may be that teacher tend to treat their male and female students differently, an example of this is they tend to punish males harsher then the female students and get in more trouble than if a female student did it. Because this happens in classrooms, it may encourage the male students to rebel against the teacher, truanting classes they don’t like or causing disruptions in the classroom. Disrupting the class can also encourage their friends to do the same and result loosing out in their education.
Not every female student achieves higher than the male students, the question is only taken from an average reading of marks and not the individuals, therefore in my study this doesn’t apply to everyone, just in general. This also applies to some of the possible reasons, it doesn’t apply to every family, teacher etc.
I think the most important reason for why the female gender has over taken the males in education is the huge increase in job opportunities, which encourages females to stay on for further education as men and women are considered equal as they didn’t completely before. This has changed the attitudes of women, making them try harder in school to live the life they wish to lead.
