Running Head: CHILD ABUSE Child abuse [Name of the writer] [Name of the institution] Child abuse Introduction The definition of child abuse comprises four types of abuse and neglect: physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional/psychological abuse. Despite the delineation of these four categories, there is little consensus about how to define abuse. This lack of universal definition makes it difficult to assess the prevalence of child abuse and point to its existence. Moreover, as a result of cultural differences in child care and socialization, certain behaviors may be identified as abusive in one cultural context but not in others. These four forms of child abuse are difficult to define because parenting and disciplinary practices vary across cultures. For example, the practice of separating the infant from his or her parents by putting the child in a separate room or in a crib after birth is common for many parents in the United States. In contrast, this practice is seen as neglectful and hurtful among others who view the infant as totally dependent on the parents after birth. Thus, it is the parent's responsibility to be close to the infant in order to identify and respond to the infant's ongoing needs. Hence, in these cultures, the infant may stay in the same room as the parents or sleep in the same bed. An Asian custom called cao gio involves rubbing a

Child Labor and Child abuse.

The desperate conditions affecting the rural as well as the urban poor in India are forcing growing numbers of children to toil often in subhuman conditions. They are deprived of their most basic rights as children, including education and a joyful childhood. In many cases this lack of protection is subject to CHILD ABUSE. Child abuse is the physical, psychological or sexual maltreatment of children. Most child abuse happens in a child's home, with a smaller amount occurring in the organizations, schools or communities they interact with. There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse,psychological/emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. Different jurisdictions have developed their own definitions of what constitutes child abuse is for the purposes of removing a child from their family and/or prosecuting a criminal charge. The mental health journal states that child abuse is defined as "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; an act or failure to

Discuss child abuse.

Child Abuse 4/4/2008 Heather Summer Word count 3897 In this paper I will discuss child abuse, the definitions of abuse also the signs and symptoms to look out for. I will examine the affects of abuse and what can be done to help children that suffer from abuse. There is no absolute definition of child abuse; however official definitions of child abuse usually describe abusive incidents, taking into account whether there is definite knowledge of an intention to harm or knowingly not to prevent harm by any person having care or custody of the child. Harm includes physical injury, physical neglect and failure to thrive, e.g. exposure to dangerous circumstances or starvation; emotional abuse where the health and development of the child is threatened; and also sexual abuse where children under 17 years have been involved in sexual activities they do not truly comprehend or to which they do not give informed consent. Neglect is the persistent lack of appropriate care of children, including love, stimulation, safety, nourishment, warmth, education and medical attention. It can have a serious effect on a child's physical, mental and emotional development. For babies and very young children, it can be life-threatening. Child Sexual Abuse

Lanie Fitzpatrick May 30, 2008 English 2 / Period 6 Mini-Arg. Paper Final Copy Child sexual abuse has gained major public attention in the past few decades. Various factors in the recent years have generated a public reaction regarding child sexual abuse, which has become one of the most high-profile crimes. "At Sifers' jury trial, 14-year-old S.T. testified about Sifers having raped her five years earlier. S.T. described Sifers' disposition the night of the alleged rape as "upset . . . like he'd been drinking." RP Vol. I at 24. She recalled Sifers following her into her bedroom, closing the door, and pushing her down on the bed. Sifers then pulled down her pajamas and pushed his penis inside her vagina. Afterwards, he said if she told anybody, he would hurt her, her younger siblings, and her mother." (State of Washington v. Charles Wayne Sifers) Child sexual abuse --- an unwanted, yet common, catch-22 issue that is worldwide and has been for centuries. Each year, well over 300,000 children become victims of this heinous crime against humanity. Child sexual abuse is described as any sexual activity between an adult, adolescent or older child, with a child including such things as fondling of genitals, masturbation, and oral, vaginal, or anal intercourse. It is not solely restricted to physical contact though; such abuse could include non-contact abuse, such as

Child abuse and the risk of abuse.

Child Abuse Introduction For this assignment I will begin by talking about the risks of abuse within the family, outside the family and in a care setting. Moving onto the next topic which will be the factors that influence things before they happen (predisposing factor). Whilst I am giving an explanation about this, I will relate the abuser of a child, including things such as substance abuse, lack of attachment and many more. In relation to this I will talk about the child/young person that is being abused and the reasons such as pre-maturity and/or disability. Following this I will discuss the types of abuse/neglect and the indicator of abuse. I will also talk about the consequences of abuse meaning the emotional, social and physical ways that the child/ young person will handle it. To conclude this I will make clear of the factors that contribute to abuse and neglect. Risk of Abuse 'Within a Family' Abuse is something that can happen anywhere you go whether it is within your family, outside of a family and in an environment that you are in such as a care setting. If you are within a stable family, you would think that nothing is capable of going wrong. Although you are in a family that does not have stress and other things going on, anything can happen! Things such as a family member becoming ill can cause a stable family to become insecure. This may cause the

What is Child Abuse?

What is Child Abuse? By definition, child abuse is the deliberate and willful injury of a child by a caretaker hitting, beating with an object, slamming against a wall, even killing. It involves active, hostile, aggressive treatment. The key word in the definition of child abuse is deliberate. Why would anyone physically harm a child? The physical destruction of a child is the extreme reaction of parents to the stress of having children. Most people are not aware of the fact that deliberately hitting a child is considered a felony in all fifty states. Abuse of children is more common than most people realize. At least one out of five adult women and one out of every ten adult men report having been abused in childhood. Recognizing child abuse in its several forms is a twentieth century phenomenon. Child abuse is also more likely to be recognized in economically developed countries than in other parts of the world. Children have been beaten and abandoned for centuries, based primarily on the belief that children are the property of their parents. By educating yourself and your children about abuse, you can help prevent it from happening to your children and better cope with it if it does. (Child 6) There are four different forms of child abuse. They are physical abuse (child beating and neglect), sexual abuse, incest, and exploitation (such as

types of child abuse

Child Protection- Task 1 Jodie Bloomer Child "abuse is commonly recognised as any behaviour towards a child that causes harm to that child in some way. This behaviour may be deliberate, or the parent may not be aware of the affects of their behaviour." (Flynn, H. et Al. 2004. p.51). Child abuse is categorised into four main areas- physical, sexual, emotional and neglect and abuse can be classed solely in one area or a combination or these areas. Penny Tassoni states "physical abuse takes place when an adult inflicts injuries on a child or does not prevent them- for example, hitting, shaking, or using excessive force when feeding." (Tassoni, P. et Al. 2002. p.570). If a child has marks or bruises to the body in places that are unlikely to be caused by an accident it could be a sign of physical abuse. These signs "might include unusual-shaped bruises, scalds and burns (sometimes from cigarettes), bite marks, and fractures." (Tassoni, P. et Al. 2002. p.575). Children may show a number of behavioural signs that also indicate physical abuse. These could include being withdrawn and unusually quiet, being aggressive towards others or in role-play situations, not wanting to remove clothing, for example getting changed for P.E. It could also be if the child doesn't want to sit down or seems to 'wince' when putting pressure on part of the body, and another sign is if the child is

Types Of Child Abuse

Types of abuse Child abuse is categorised into different types. The types are: * Physical abuse – Physical abuse is physically abusing the child and giving them non accidental injuries as shown below in the picture. Physical abuse can involve hitting, shaking, throwing, burning, suffocating the child or any other type of out of control punishment. Physical harm may also be caused when a parent or carer produces the symptoms of, or deliberately induces, illness in a child. * Sexual abuse – Sexual abuse is having sex with children under the age of consent (16 in the UK). This could involve forcing a child to take part in a sexual activity; it may not involve a high level of violence as the child may be unaware of what is happening to them this is classed as rape. This is physical contact which can be assault by penetration e.g. rape or oral sex or assault by non penetrative acts such as kissing, masturbation or rubbing. There are also non-contact activities such as: involving children to witness or produce sexual images or do sexual activities, encouraging a child to behave in inappropriate ways, or grooming the child in preparation for abuse and use of sexually explicit language. Both males and females can commit acts of sexual abuse. * Emotional abuse – Emotional abuse constantly emotionally mistreating a child to the result of causing severe adverse effects on

English Speaking - Child Abuse

"Each day that we pretended we replaced reality with lies, or dreams, or angry schemes, in search of dignity... until our lies got bigger than the truth, and we had no one real to be" Do you know what this means? Well, Dana Munkirs wrote this in her poem, "For Children Who Were Broken." The point she was trying to get across is that children that are abused hide it with what ever they possibly can. People need to be able to recognize abused children and help them through their ordeal. However many children go unnoticed and do not get helped. Hopefully, I will be able to help you recognize the types, causes, and effects of abuse so you can use them to your advantage; There are three main types of abuse: physical, neglect and emotional. Physical abuse is when an adult repeatedly hits the child for no reason often bruising them, and it is the most noticeable of the three types. "Our bodies were forsaken, With no safe place to hide, We learned to stop our hearing, and feeling our outsides." Physical abuse can be just one incident, or it can happen repeatedly. Physical abuse can be hitting, shaking, throwing, hair pulling, hot objects being placed on the child's skin, or the child being sexually harassed and used. The second type of abuse is neglect. Neglect is when the child is not getting the required attention from their parent or not getting fed and clothed.
