How does Priestly present Eric in "An Inspector Calls"?

In the opening stage directions, Priestly refers to Eric as ‘not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive’. How does priestly present these and other ideas about Eric in an Inspector calls? Intro: Eric is described at the start of the play "in his early twenties" which suggests that he would be going out with his friends to party and drink. He is also so described as "not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive" This suggests that he is a complicated man, the audience from the beginning of the play cannot fully understand Eric, they know that something is not right. At the beginning of the play Eric is very suspicious, he gives the impression to the audience that he is hiding something "Eric suddenly guffaws" then he is unable to control his laughter, as if he is nervous about something. Priestly keeps making remarks about Eric’s unusual characteristics, the reason he does is to make the audience feel nervous around him, like you could be expecting anything when he says something. From Eric’s language he uses he can tell that he is drunk, and not himself, “Good old Shelia!” Priestley’s use of the exclamation mark emphasises Eric’s exaggeration and makes the audience wonder why he is acting so strange. The audience gets hints that Eric is a drunk from the off, Shelia says “you’re squiffy” he denies straight away with an aggressive tone, which what

Eric and Mrs.Birlings relationship during the play An Inspector Calls

Yr 10 Essay on An Inspector Calls In the play Eric has a lot to confess, so his confession is very tensing for both the audience and the actors on screen. Eric is known as the chief culprit in the play because he played the part of making The Girl pregnant. At the end of Act 2 Mrs.Birling is questioned by the Inspector and we learn that 'A young lad' made The Girl pregnant and that when she went for help from the committee she was turned down by them because she said her name was Mrs.Birling: 'First, she called herself Mrs.Birling' From this we learn that Eric could be the father, and that is why she used that name. This has caused suspense both on and off stage, because now the audience would be wondering why she used that name and if she heard it from somewhere or if Eric is the father but Mrs.Birling hasn't figured that out yet. Also we learn of Eric's heavy drinking this is told to us by his sister Sheila and her fiancé Gerald Croft: 'He has been steadily drinking too much for the past 2 years.' With this line we learn that all this time Eric has been heavily drinking and has not been able to control himself with his drinking. Tension mounts when Mrs.Birling doesn't believe them: 'It isn't true.' This is showing us that Mrs.Birling thinks a lot of her son and thinks he cannot do anything wrong: but she is proved wrong by Gerald: I'm afraid it is y'know' This

Discuss The Role Of Eric Birling In The Play: An Inspector Calls.

Discuss The Role Of Eric Birling In The Play: An Inspector Calls Eric, I think, plays an extremely important role in the play: An Inspector Calls, probably because of his difference in personality from the other protagonists. Eric is a young man who likes getting his own way and being the centre of attention. I know this because he says things like "Look here I've had enough of this," which shows that he is willing to take control of a situation and impose his views on others, making him a key character in the play. Because of his assertiveness he is able to capture the audience's attention and therefore keeps the people watching gripped, which obviously proves to be quite useful, when trying to create a successful play. At the beginning of act one, all the characters are quite pleased with themselves as they have just enjoyed a meal, to celebrate the future wedding of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. It is difficult to assume what Eric's personality is like at first because he has been seemingly influenced by drink. This, I think, is obvious because after reading the stage directions I can see that "Eric suddenly guffaws" apparently for no reason, and also Sheila accuses him of being "squiffy". One thing I can tell is that Eric has somewhat different thoughts and opinions than his father - Arthur Birling. I can tell this because at one point, at the beginning of act one,

How does Priestley express ideas about Eric Birling in 'An Inspector Calls'

Transfer-Encoding: chunked How does Priestley express ideas about Eric Birling in ‘An Inspector Calls’ Eric’s Drinking One explanation for Eric’s drinking perhaps is the hypocrisy of his family, and Eric feels he has to join in with the male dominated culture in society. For example when Gerald suggests he is going to be careful Eric expresses his amusement; “Eric suddenly guffaws. His parents look at him” this is the strongest suggestion yet that Eric is aware of Gerald’s affair, if not the exact specifics. When asked by Sheila what was causing his amusement Eric replies; “I don’t know – really. Suddenly I felt I just had to laugh” this shows how Eric defends the male and shows how Eric has to defend the male power not the female power. This could suggest that the hypocrisy of Gerald who is highly esteemed by his family had led to Eric’s frustration and led him on a path to alcoholism. Eva’s Sacking + Capitalism Eric clearly shows much more sympathy to Priestley’s views than that of his father. Discussing Eva Smith’s death, Eric suggests; “Why shouldn’t they try for higher wages? We try for the highest possible prices? … you said yourself she was a good worker” this shows how Eric is questioning not only the decision making of his father but also Mr. Birling’s view on society. Mr. Birling is a keen advocate of everybody

An Inspector Calls

In 1945, J.B. Priestley was 51 and felt very strongly about the state of government in England at that moment in time and thought that people were being exploited in England, so he had some very liberal views. He expressed many of these views to the public in the form of a book called, 'An Inspector Calls'. The play 'An Inspector Calls' was written by J.B. Priestley, in 1945 but was set in 1912. The play takes place in the Birling household on one evening after a family celebration. The celebration is of the engagement of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. It is just after dinner when an inspector visits their house investigating the suicide of a young woman. As the play unravels we see that all members of the family are somehow involved in the suicide. For many reasons, an audience may consider this play a detective story and nothing else. It fits with the stereotypical detective story format in a number of ways. Firstly it is generally about conducting an inquiry into the suicide of a young, working-class woman. "Two hours ago a young woman died in the Infirmary. She'd been taken there this afternoon because she'd swallowed some strong disinfectant." This sentence also means that the death is announced very close to the beginning of the play, another trademark of detective stories. From the beginning it appears to be a mystery story but ironically we find out that they are

An Inspector Calls

'An Inspector Calls' was written in the winter of 1945, by J. B. Priestley. Priestley set the play though in 1912, and having lived through both world wars, it is quite significant that the play was set before World War I and World War II and was in fact written after both of the world wars. Priestley wrote his plays having a social and political mind, because he grew up among his father's friends, and many of their political discussions have featured in his plays as in 'An Inspector Calls'. 'An Inspector Calls' is a modern morality play and has the style of a detective thriller, and the moral issues Priestley is trying to convey, are sustained throughout the play. The play begins in the Birling's house, around a table, celebrating Sheila, Mr. Birling's daughter's engagement to Gerald Croft a wealthy business man. The evening's celebrations are soon intruded though by the sharp ring of the front door bell, and in comes the harsh looking character of a police inspector. He has come to investigate the suicide of a young working-class woman, named Eva Smith, and eventually under the questioning and inducement of the Inspector each member of the family reveals their involvement in Eva Smith's death. Priestley's main aim in writing 'An Inspector Calls' was to teach the reader about the morals of responsibility and to teach them to treat all people with the same deserved respect

An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls In 'An Inspector calls', Priestly looks at many characters, their stage actions, language and their ideas in great detail. In this essay I will be exploring and analysing the relationship between Arthur Birling and his son Eric. After reading the play, I found out that Mr Birling and his son Eric did not have a strong relationship. This is because Arthur did not realise when his son started drinking so much and stole money from his office. Making a girl pregnant could not be hidden from a father, but Arthur did not come to know anything about it until the end. I will be using quotes and stage actions to show the relationship between Arthur and Eric. At the start of the play, when the inspector had arrived and was talking to Arthur about Eva Smith/Daisy Renton, Eric was constantly accusing Arthur and telling him that what he did was bad and he shouldn't have done that, and this is evident as Eric had said, 'He (Arthur) could have kept her (Eva Smith) on instead of throwing her out' (pg.15). Here all Eric was doing was making Mr Birling (Arthur) feel guilty. This proves one of my points where I had mentioned about Mr Birling and Eric having a weak relationship, because normally in a situation like this a son would be doing his best to sort out a problem his father has. But here all Eric was doing was trying to make Arthur feel guilty, which obviously wasn't

An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls 'An inspector calls' is a book written by J.B Priestly before the First World War; his work contains controversial and politically charged messages. Priestly became very concerned about the problems of social inequality in Britain. When the book was written in the 1912's there were strong distinctions between the upper and low classes. As we read through the book we realise how much change has occurred after the First World War. Mr Birling is described as a 'heavy looking rather portentous man in his middle fifties but rather provincial in his speech'. When Priestly describes Mr Birling like this I jump to conclusions; he must be a very crude and ill mannered man. During Shelia's engagement party Mr Birling says. 'This is the happiest days of my life'. We all know the only reason Mr Birling is happy is because merger with Croft limited Co. will be good for his working business. He makes strong predictions about the war not happening and seems quite optimistic about it. However we all know the war is going to happen; when the audience know something the character doesn't this is called 'dramatic irony'. If Mr Birling's prediction is wrong about the war what else could he be wrong about? This is a sign he is also bigheaded. There is a case where Mr Birling interrupts Eric in his speech, Eric: Yes-But-Still. Then Mr Birling comes in; this is another sign that

An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls Introduction "An Inspector Calls" is a play written by J.B Priestley in 1946. It is set in 1912. It is about a Family celebrating an engagement party. The Inspector makes an unexpectedly arrival to the house. He starts to investigate about an alleged suicide. The main theme (or one of the main theme) about this play is 'Social Responsibility' which means to care for others in the community. I will discuss the main points about each character in the play. My first character I will discuss about is Mr Birling. Mr Birling Mr Birling was a rich self-made man he was rich because of his company called 'Birling & Co'. He was snobbish about the business because he would give more money to his family than to his employees. He thinks the 'Cranks' by which he means the socialists tells you to look after others in the community. He is a Capitalist which, is every man for himself. "Capital versus Labour agitation's and all those silly war scares" When the Inspector questions Mr Birling, he was calm and patient. As soon as the Inspector told the family about the alleged suicide of Eva Smith, the family was shocked. Mr Birling answers the Inspector's questions, he shows no emotion, but when the Inspector tells Mr Birling how he was involved with Eva Smith he slightly changes his attitude. "Yes, She was out of work for the next two months" The Inspector shows the

"An Inspector Calls".

"An Inspector Calls" "An Inspector Calls" by J.B Priestley is a play in which I have recently read which is about the characters are given the chance to become better people. The theme of this play is social and personal responsibility. Social responsibility means that you have a responsibility to help people in need. Personal responsibility means that you have a responsibility to yourself and your family. "An Inspector Calls" is set in the fictional town of Bromley. It starts in the Birling house where the Birling family are celebrating the engagement of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft. While celebrating the Birling family is very pleased with them particularly Mr Birling because Gerald's father owns a company like his so he is pleased because he will be able to go in to business together. Then mysterious Inspector Goole comes asking questions about a pregnant woman who killed herself by drinking strong disinfectant. After asking a lot questions, the Birling family realise that they all knew the girl and may have contributed to her death. Mr Birling the smug father and hard- headed businessman fired her because she wanted more money. His daughter Sheila had her fired from her new job she was jealous of her. Then Gerald Croft who is engaged to be married to Sheila learned he used her for his own pleasure then left her when he didn't want her anymore. Eric, the brother of
