Inspector Goole in An inspector calls

Inspector Goole in An inspector calls I will be answering the question "What is the importance of the inspector in J. B Preisley's 'An Inspector Calls'". I think the Inspector is the characters guilty conscience. To prove this I will go through every character and comment on how they react to the Inspector and I shall also comment on how the Inspector reacts to the Birlings and Gerald. Inspector Goole makes his entrance in the middle of the Birlings celebration, they are celebrating the engagement of Sheila (their daughter) to Gerald Croft son of sir George Croft of Crofts Limited. At the time the Inspector enters Mrs. Birling and Sheila have left the room so Mr. Birling, Gerald and Eric (his son) are left in the room. Mr. Birling is in the middle of a speech to Eric and Gerald: "a man has to make his own way-has to look after himself-and his family to". He is cut off when the maid Edna tells Mr. Birling that an Inspector is here to see him this might be a secret message by J.B Priestly (the writer of the play) saying that life shouldn't be like people shouldn't just look after their family and friends they should be caring to other people and during the evening the characters learn that lesson because if they had treated Eva Smith well she wouldn't have died. The Inspector first questions Mr. Birling, a proud man who is very old fashioned. The Inspector came down on

Inspector Goole- An Inspector Calls Coursework

Inspector Goole- An Inspector Calls Coursework An Inspector Calls is a play written by J.B. Priestley. The play was first staged in 1946 and is set in 1912, before the Second World War. The play is a typical detective genre where there is a connection between each character, a chain of events and a twist at the end. The play is about an inspector who appears at the Birling household to interrogate each character and shows that there is a connection. The Inspector at first seems like an ordinary inspector but it becomes apparent to each character that inspector Goole is not actually a real inspector. We can suggest that the inspector may be of the supernatural from his name 'Goole' this sounds like 'Ghoul', which adds to the supernatural effect. Also spector, which is inside of the word 'inspector', means ghost this helps suggest that the inspector is supernatural. We can suggest that the inspector is one of the conscience as the inspector reveals each of the wrong each character has done. We can also suggest that the Inspector is there to show Priestley's views on society at this period of time. The name of the book 'An inspector Calls' can suggest that the inspector is not the ordinary. This is done as the title is 'an' which is not specific. If Priestley wanted to show the inspector was the ordinary he would have used 'the' as this is specific. The play is set in the

An Inspector Calls: examination of Inspector Goole

An Inspector Calls: examination of Inspector Goole After watching and reading 'an inspector calls', it is clear to anyone that the inspector is a very special and unusual character. Throughout the play the he questions all of the Birling family and Gerald Croft trying to make them confess the horrible things they have done and making some of them regret their deeds. This shows that J.B priestly represents him as a 'collective conscience.' 'Goole' the name of the inspector, gives us a clue that the writer intended for him to be thought of as a spirit or ghost (Goole resembling the word ghoul which means an evil spirit.). The inspector is used as a representative of justice, his only purpose is to make the Birling family and Gerald Croft confess their wrong doings and make them feel sorrow for the events that happened. The inspector tries to show them what's wrong and make them reflect on it so they don't make the same mistakes again. Eric, Gerald and Shiela all realise and admit their wrong by the end of the play, unlike Arthur and Sybil Birling who stay disobedient till the end. They cannot admit their wrong and say what they did was 'duty' and right. Although they say they are right, they probably know they were wrong. This means that the goal for the inspector's role was accomplished. The inspector is shown as a mysterious character throughout the play. Firstly he does a

What function does Inspector Goole play in "An Inspector Calls"

What function does Inspector Goole play in "An Inspector Calls"? In J.B. Priestly's play, "An Inspector Calls", Inspector Goole plays a vital role. In this essay I will address the different roles this character surveys. It was written in 1945, 33 years after it was set. Since it was set so far behind when it was written and lots of things happened in that time, for example the Titanic and the 1WW, J.B. Priestly uses lots of dramatic irony which really draws the audience in. The inspector is made to be made a very strong character by being a very hard, tough even, character who is their to do his job and is not even threatened by Birlings threats. He is made also to be a tough character by first when he first comes in there are stage directions which show the lighting to be pink and intimate then when the inspector arrives it is written to be brighter and harder. Secondly whenever he talks doesn't go on and on, he talks straight to the point. For example where he says, "No. She wanted to end her life"," She wasn't pretty when I saw her today, but...." and " (sharply) Come along, Mr Croft. What happened?" The genre of this play is murder mystery but it is altered to be more political. This is mainly of J.B. Priestly's socialist upbringing. I think that "Inspector Goole" is more of a mouthpiece for Priestly's views. His dad was a socialist and was much like the

An Inspector Calls - The Mystery Of Inspector Goole

An Inspector Calls The Mystery Of Inspector Goole The inspector is a strange character and this is shown throughout the play in several situations. An inspector should talk to people with courtesy and respect, especially to the Birlings as they are respected and upheld members of the public. The inspector however, does not and proceeds to interrogate them in a very peculiar manner. It appears as the inspector does have manners at first when he enters but as the play develops he has no respect for any of them. This asks the question that although the inspector may be new surely he should know the simple procedure of interrogation and how to behave and respond to people. So why could it be that the inspector has this mysterious and bewildering side to him? He is far too inquisitive and upfront with everyone he speaks to. Why could this be? Could he be an impostor? Or is he something more. The inspector leaves under very strange circumstances and you think now more of it because the Birlings have not committed any known offences and therefore cannot be charged with anything. However at the end Gerald seems to think he has it all figured out, that the inspector was merely an impostor and then they phone the infirmary to see if any girls had come in and died through swallowing disinfectant. The infirmary is sure that no one has been taken in. Then the telephone rings sharply and

Discuss the role of Inspector Goole in the play 'An Inspector Calls'.

Azadhassan M Gulamali Twentieth Century Drama Coursework Essay Title: Discuss the role of Inspector Goole in the play 'An Inspector Calls'. In this essay I will be discussing the role of Inspector Goole in the play 'An Inspector Calls'. I will be commenting on the effect Inspector Goole has on the other characters around him. I will also be analysing dialogue to see how it helps to motivate the characters around him. I will also analyse and interpret the theme of the play. I will also look closely at how J B Priestley makes good use of historical context. Being set in 1912, 'An Inspector Calls' contains a lot of historical context and political views which were around at the time. J B Priestley has strong political views on social responsibility; which motivated him to write this play. He wanted to convey his beliefs and thoughts through a character, so he created Inspector Goole. J B Priestley was a socialist and believed everyone lives together and we all affect one another, he has used the Inspector to express his views. The play is about an investigation into the suicide of Eva Smith, a working class girl. The Birling's do not realise that each one of them had affected her life. However the main theme of the play is social responsibility, which Priestley has strong views about. Inspector Goole is the central character to this play and he has a strong aim which he

Role of Inspector Goole in An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestly

The role of Inspector Goole in An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestly. Inspector Goole is probably the most important character in An Inspector Calls. He creates big impressions and somehow reveals all about the Birling family and Gerald Croft. He interrupts their celebrations to question them over the death of Eva Smith/ Daisy Renton. In the process of doing this he makes some of the characters realise what they are really like, and how the small actions they had done in the past affected her and lead to her death. He enters in a most appropriate way, "dressed in a darkish suit of the period”. He speaks very carefully. The inspector creates "an impression of massiveness." J B Priestley makes the inspector have a big impression to make him feel superior to the Birlings. The inspector has a habit of staring at the person before talking to them as a way of intimidating the person so that they feel he is more powerful than they are. He acts, at first, in a way that a normal inspector would. Such as when he refuses a glass of whisky because he is "on duty”. This behaviour helps to ensure that the family believe he is a real police inspector and so they don't find out who he really is. He mostly remains calm and asks questions often. He uses the answers to manipulate them so he can question them further. When he asks his questions he jumps straight to the point; such as, "I

Inspector Goole is More than a Staging Device in An Inspector Calls

Inspector Goole is More than a Staging Device in An Inspector Calls Inspector Goole is More than a Staging Device in An Inspector Calls Staging devices such as lighting, narration, dance sequences, sound effects, stage props and music are intended to serve a specific purpose in a play. A staging device is usually intended to enhance the play's central message or to create the desired mood and atmosphere. In An Inspector Calls, Inspector Goole's role is central to the play's message of social responsibility. It is through the Inspector's meetings with the Birling family and Gerald Croft that each character is made aware of his or her selfish and uncaring attitude towards the less fortunate in society. In this sense, Inspector Goole is a staging device but he exceeds the expectations of such a role and it would be unfair to call him 'just' a staging device. Before the Inspector arrives at the Birling home we meet the family celebrating Mr Gerald Croft's engagement to Sheila Birling. Mr Birling is an industrialist and the people at his table represent the wealthy upper class, whose speech and actions reflect the arrogance and prejudice of such families. Mrs Birling's reproach to her husband for having paid the cook a compliment for the fine meal, [Arthur, you're not supposed to say such things], is an example of the blatant disregard shown for servants such as Edna.

Analyse J.B. Preistly's Presentation of Inspector Goole in 'An Inspector Calls'

Analyse J.B. Preistly's Presentation of Inspector Goole in 'An Inspector Calls' 'An Inspector Calls' is a play written by J.B. Preistly in 1945 after WW2. The play was set in 1912 just before WW1, this date was chosen to show the contrasts of the two orders and to help J.B.Preistly's message of the play become clearer. In the world in1945, as I've said, it was the end of WW2 and the Labour Party had been elected for government for the first time. Preistly's message of the play is that he thinks that the old older was a bad idea because it had already got the world in 2 world wars' and that every body should respect and care about each other . The Inspector is an important character is important to the play because he is like the spokes person of the play because he shows that the ways of the old order are wrong and that the way of the new order was the right way to go. He is also pointing out Preistly's message by saying that the old order views from Arthur Birling about how everybody should look after themselves and not care about any other problems in the world accept your own. The way that Preistly does this is by contrasting Inspector Goole and Arthur Birling for example the Inspector is cool, calm and collected, Arthur Birling has to always have his wits about him and always try to be right. My first impressions of the Inspector are that he is an important character

The role and function on Inspector Goole in an inspector calls

The role and function on Inspector Goole in an inspector calls Priestley uses the inspector to get the Birling family to admit that their ways are wrong. Priestley is trying to say that the society divide of the social classes is wrong and that we shouldn't do it and everyone should be treated the same. The play is about a girl named Eva Smith/Daisy Renton who has died from drinking some disinfectant. Inspector Goole comes round to the house and gets the Birling family to admit to doing something wrong which could have driven her to her death. Priestley makes Inspector Goole use language that has force and the Inspector manipulates the characters to get them to confess their ways. John Boynton Priestley was born before the First World War, so he saw how society was divided into the bourgeoisie and the poor working class. He also lived through the First World War. Through these years he saw how the divide in society disappears. During world war one, Priestley survived the front lines in Flanders. He began writing plays in the 1930's. He died on the fourteenth of august 1984. Priestley's play was staged in1945, but he set it in 1912 because he didn't want people to go back to the old ways because of what they had learnt from the war had brought them all together as one society. He was worried people would go back to the bourgeoisie class and the working class people because
