Macbeth, Macduff and the Witches.

GCSE English and English Literature Assignment Macduff has just told me that he was not born naturally; he actually turned to me and said "Macduff" was from his mothers womb untimely ripped". For me, that is the end, I think about the witch's predictions. Then, I think back to when it all started. We were on our way home, Banquo and I when we meet the witches who told us that I would be Thane of Glamis, well I knew that already. Then they told me that I would be Thane of Cawdor, This surprised me as the Thane of Cawdor was very well and living. Then the final witch said to me "All hail Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter". When I heard this I wanted to here more but they wouldn't speak to me. Then my friend Banquo asked them about him, what will happen to him? They said to Banquo that he will be "lesser than Macbeth but greater". Which at first didn't make sense but then it came to me that he would not be king but his children would succeed to the throne. I turned to question them and suddenly they disappeared. I saw Ross riding towards us he told us that the king has heard of our success against the Norwegians. Then he said that the Thane of Cawdor has been relieved from his command and the king has given me the job of being Thane of Cawdor. I couldn't believe it the witches were right, their predictions came true and if that prediction came true than so should the rest. I

Macduff as a Symbol of Virtue

Macduff as Symbol of Virtue in Macbeth In the continuing literary quarrel of Good versus Evil, we are presented with two characters: Macduff and Macbeth. Macduff seems to mature in nobility and virtue, becoming a stronger and more admirable character despite the circumstances of tragedy dealt to him; he grows to become a hero, unlike his arch rival, Macbeth, who rivets himself on the tragedies he causes and thus becomes a tyrant. Macduff possesses a number of character traits, which lend themselves to comprise a man fit to be a leader and hero. These traits are best shown when compared to those of the opposing persona of Macbeth. Macduff's inner strength allows his grief to overcome his guilt when dealt with tragedy, whereas Macbeth is quite the opposite. Macduff becomes essential to Shakespeare's Macbeth as he portrays the overcoming force of good, just as Macbeth represents the succumbing force of bad. Macduff and Macbeth are a study of opposites; this becomes especially clear when we look at their personalities. We know Macbeth to be of a treacherous nature as this trait is portrayed throughout the play. Where Macbeth is treacherous, Macduff is noble. We learn of Macduff's virtuous mettle in two ways throughout the play, through the words of Malcolm and from his own lips. Malcolm praises Macduff as full of "noble passion" Act IV, Scene 3, Line 114 and Macduff speaks of

MacDuff’s view

MacDuff's view Dear Diary, The unthinkable had happened today, our glorious emperor, Duncan had been horrifically assassinated by an atrocious individual last night at Macbeth's castle. As a loyal and patriotic thane of Scotland, I swear that I will avenge Duncan's death. Duncan had always been like a father to me. He was a lovely King and was a great ruler. He was kind to the people and he was caring. He was loyal and devoted to the country. There was absolutely no reason that he should die. Seeing his body on the ground had frozen me on my spot. I was shocked, deeply saddened and terribly disgusted at whichever animal that had done this terrible deed. When Macbeth entered the room of death, I was extremely appalled by his behaviour towards the death of the one who had been so nice to him. He did not seem to be in anyway saddened by this terrible incident, yet he proclaimed that he was so furious that he killed Duncan's attendants. Malcolm and Donalbain were not exceptionally emotional about this incident either. After hearing the news about their father's death, they were more concerned about who killed him and were more worried about them being next to die rather than feeling any emotions for Duncan's death. As I entered Duncan's room in Macbeth's castle, the room was drenched with blood and the smell of death hung in the air. Myself, among with the

Macbeth coursework Macbeth: the morning after Duncan, the king, has been murdered Lennox and Macduff arrive at Macbeth's home to collect the king. When Macbeth is speaking to Lennox and Macduff, Macbeth isn't saying enough to make them feel welcomed at his home. Macduff is polite and asks whether the king is awake yet and Macbeth answers with "not yet" suggesting that he is not in the mood for talking. He is probably extremely nervous at the moment in time and is pale and sweating a lot. He is also not talking much because he is thinking of what will happen when they find the king. "Will they blame him? What is he going to do if it is him?" In Shakespeare's writings he uses ten syllables in every line but in the case of Macbeth, he uses stichomythias, which are short broken lines. When Macbeth is transporting them to the king's room he says "the labour we delight in physics" which is an old proverb. He uses this because he is so nervous and he can't think of anything to say, so he says a proverb which isn't his own words. Once they reach the king's room Lennox asks Macbeth if the king is leaving on that day, and Macbeth says "he does - he did appoint so". In some ways many people think that Macbeth is giving the whole murder away by saying this because he could mean two things. The first meaning is, that when he says "he did appoint so" he means that he did appoint to go but

Paying particular attention to Shakespeare's use of dramatic devices, compare the murder scenes of Duncan, Banquo and the Macduff family.

Paying particular attention to Shakespeare's use of dramatic devices, compare the murder scenes of Duncan, Banquo and the Macduff family. 'Macbeth' is a classical tragedy, which follows the rise and fall of a once great man. Shakespeare's tragedy is about Macbeth's bloody rise to power, including the murder of the king, Duncan, and the guilt-ridden chain of evil deeds leading to more evil deeds. Macbeth commits three murders in this play. The murder of Duncan is a very terrible murder as it is regicide, and the audience watching would feel great shock towards Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. During the Jacobean times people believed in the Divine Right of Kings. This meant that God put the king on the throne. The murder does not take place on the stage. To show it on stage in Shakespearian times would have been very difficult and therefore it is left to the audience's imagination. Instead, we sense the murder happening because it is placed between many intense happenings. In act two scene one we see Macbeth's vision of a dagger leading him to Duncan. 'Is this a dagger which I see before me, /The handle toward my hand?'. Macbeth thinks his eyes are playing tricks due to his worry and has doubts about killing the king. He fears that 'Thy very stones prate of my whereabout'. This shows how nervous he is. However he still proceeds and kills Duncan. After the murder, there is a quick

Compare and contrast the roles of Lady Macbeth and Lady Macduff in the play, giving close consideration to their relationship with their husbands.

Compare and contrast the roles of Lady Macbeth and Lady Macduff in the play, giving close consideration to their relationship with their husbands. In the play 'Macbeth' we notice that the roles of Lady Macbeth and Macduff are very different. In the one scene that Lady Macduff is in we see that she is portrayed as a stereotypical woman of the Jacobean era. She was defined principally as a mother, was reliant on her husband and helpless when he is absent. At the beginning of the play we see these properties in Lady Macbeth. However she specifically called on the 'spirits' to repress her femininity thus taking away these properties to make her ruthless enough to kill Duncan. I feel that both of the characters seem quite strong but in different ways. Lady Macduff copes fine without her husband but Lady Macbeth is strong in different way. In Act 1 Scene 5 we see the relationship that Lady Macbeth and Macbeth had. It is noticeable that their relationship in this scene is much like that of what we would expect a couple of their era to be like. Lady Macbeth stays at home while the husband is out at work. We Lady Macbeth receives the letter from Macbeth we see the how strong their relationship is. I think is mainly because Lady Macbeth immediately understands the full implications of what was written in the letter and in a way her response is uncompromising. She will not let

English Literature essay Christy Li 5B (23) 7) Choose three minor characters from the list below and discuss their dramatic functions in the play. Ross Old Man Malcolm Lady Macduff Porter There are numbers of minor characters in William Shakespeare's "Macbeth". These minor characters each carry their dramatic functions, which contribute to the development of the play. I going to discuss the dramatic functions of three of the minor characters, they are Malcolm, Porter and Lady Macduff. Malcolm is the son of King Duncan, the rightful successor of the throne. He escapes to England after the murder of Duncan by Macbeth for the fear of his life. Later in the play, he is convinced by Macduff to be back to Scotland to lead the battle against Macbeth and claim the throne back. Being the rightful heir to the throne, the dramatic function of Malcolm is to make a contrast with Macbeth who sits in the position of king of Scotland like a "dwarfish thief in the giant robes". In Act 4 scene III where Malcolm tests Macduff's loyalty, clear contrast between Malcolm and Macbeth is shown. The action of testing Macduff as Malcolm can trust no one since he flew to England after the death of his father, shows that Malcolm not easily allured by the words of others, this contrasts with Macbeth who believe firmly in the witches' words without examining the

Macbeth - Act five scene, 8

Macbeth Literature assignment. For my literature assignment I have chosen act five scene, 8. I have chosen this scene because it is the final result of the play. From what the witches said in the first act 'fair is foul and, foul is fair'. By Macduff winning his fight against Macbeth puts the play back on track. I have also chosen this scene because this is where Macbeth, the main character gets killed and loses the throne to Macduff. My scene is going to be staged in a boxing ring. The fight in scene 8 between Macbeth and Macduff will be based on Rahman and Lewis, which will be later this year. Earlier this year Rahman and Lewis had already fought. The titles changed as Rahman won by a lucky left hook. The boxing match will be this year so the language that the actors speak will be modern. The boxing match would go on until Macduff wins by knock out. About five rounds. At the beginning of the scene, you will think that Macbeth is winning but then it starts to change as Macduff retaliates, and knocks Macbeth out and becomes king. This is refereeing to the Lewis and Rahman fight as Lewis will win and becomes the king of the world. William Shakespeare wrote this play for King James of Scotland. So I'm writing my play for Don King because he is intressted in boxing and knows a lot about boxing so he would find it amusing, rather than doing the play for someone who does not

Macbeth

Little girls wear pink. Little boys wear boy. Women are intuitive. Men are deductive. Women are submissive, while men are the polar opposite: physical, functional, sexual, emotional, intellectual, and impersonal (Saltzman Chafetz page#). William Shakespeare explores these masculine characteristics in his MacBeth. Each character personifies or refutes virility, functionalism, sexuality, stoicism, practicality, leadership, and ambition. The meaning of masculinity has changed over the ages. Prehistoric man showed their dominance with murder; it was the base of their survival. They were built to kill without remorse. As time passed, murder became the agent of man's downfall. Laws and morality now prevent man from killing one another. But, deep inside each individual is the capacity to take a life. They pretend the ability does not exist for they are afraid of how society would judge them. Although under certain circumstances, time turns back and they regain their ancestor's abilities. Man is hard-wired with these characteristics, hence there is no escape. Man is hard-wired with these characteristics, hence, for Macbeth, there is no escape from the inevitable return to man's roots. When we first meet Macbeth, he is a strong and manly figure for he fought ardently for his kingdom. The hero "...unseamed him from the nave to th' chops,/ And fixed his head upon [their]
