Global Warming

Global Warming "Global warming is an increase in the earth's temperature due to fossil fuels, industries, agricultural processes caused by human activities, natural occurrences, and other gases."1 The process of global warming is somewhat complex but often referred to as short-wave solar radiation sinking into the Earth's atmosphere and warming the earth's surface; while long wave infrared radiation emitted by earth's surface is absorbed, and then re-emitted by traces of gas. 2 Climate changes that occur in our earth's atmosphere are primarily caused by a build-up of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases occur naturally in the environment; however human activity produces the largest amounts of greenhouse gases. There are many problems that can occur when high concentrations of greenhouse gases are present in our earth's atmosphere. The number one problem is that greenhouse gases cause the earth to trap in more heat. When higher levels of heat are trapped inside the earth's atmosphere it causes the overall average of the temperature to increase slowly over the years as more heat continues to be trapped. There are many misconceptions individuals have about global warming, for instance many individuals believe that pollution causes global warming, but in fact global warming is the result of burning fossil fuels, coal, and oil that release carbon dioxide. Another misconception is

Introduction - Page 1 What is happening? - Page 2 Alternative Energy - Page 3 Global Warming: a Natural Occurrence? - Page 4 Conclusion - Page 4 Bibliography - Page 5 The recent hype in the media has changed many peoples attitudes about the way in which we as humans use and burn up fossil fuels for energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy mainly consisting of coal, oil and gas. Burning fossil fuels increases the risk of global warming by adding carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This graph indicates the dramatic increase in Carbon Dioxide levels worldwide. As a result of this we must look into different ways of reducing the risk of Global Warming. One way this can be done is by using alternative fuels. Throughout this report I will be looking into different methods of producing a renewable source that doesn't effect the environment for future generations. The burning of fossil fuels by humans is the largest source of emissions of carbon dioxide, which is one of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. The atmospheric concentration of CO2, a greenhouse gas, is increasing, raising concerns that solar heat will be trapped and the average surface temperature of the Earth will rise in response. Certain gases in the atmosphere help to trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere. A greenhouse traps heat in a similar way, which is why this is called

Science is used to explain everything nowadays, however the same theory can be analysed from many points of view, it can be manipulated. We have to be clear, objective, take science as what it really is and not what some people want it to be. So lets talk facts. Imagine a car, imagine you are going too fast you press the brakes to slow down, then you are going too slow so you press the accelerator. This is known as a negative feedback. Now imagine someone comes and changes your pedals so that the accelerator pedal is on the brakes place and vice versa. Then when you are going too fast you will accelerate even more and when you are going too slow you will decelerate due to the brakes. This is known as a positive feedback. Nature is intelligent; when tectonic plates move apart somewhere else they move towards each other, this way the Earths surface is always the same size. Then logically nature will react with a negative feedback, yet the computer models used to predict the future temperatures and climatic changes are based on a large positive feedback. That doesn't seem right does it? It seems even worse when satellites records, which are thought to be a reliable piece of evidence, prove that climate is dominated by a negative feedback and that the response to doubled, even quadrupled carbon dioxide emissions is minimal. Keep this in mind when you listen to those fools who

Global Warming Speech

Welcome to SciCast. Your leading science informant. Today we will talk about global warming. There are many opinions about global warming and we’ll be discussing them with some famous professors. First of all, let’s just have an overview of global warming. Global warming is defined as A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants. Global warming is said to be caused by many reasons – some say due to human activities, some say due to the Earth and some people even disagree with the fact that global warming exists. According to the United States House of Representatives, they had a vote in April 2011, and they said “The House rejected a Democratic amendment Wednesday that would have put the chamber on record backing the widely held scientific view that global warming is occurring and humans are a major cause. “Congress accepts the scientific findings of the Environmental Protection Agency that climate changes is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for public health and welfare.” Lawmakers voted 184-240 against Rep. Henry Waxman’s (D-Calif.) amendment.” Dr. Tapio Schneider on the other hand disagrees with what the house said. He stands by his opinion that Global Warming

Title Global warming refers to the rise in the earth's temperature resulting from an increase in heat-trapping gasses in the atmosphere, simply put the warming of our globe. The earth has a natural "greenhouse effect" which is caused by energy from the sun controlling the earths weather and climate, and heats the earth's surface. In response to the sun, the earth radiates energy back into space. "The Greenhouse Effect was discovered in 1896 by a Swedish chemist who was trying to learn why the atmosphere stays warm when oxygen and nitrogen, which are the two main atmospheric gases, do not absorb heat" (Bates, 46). Atmospheric greenhouse gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases, trap the energy leaving the earth and retain it as heat, much like a greenhouse ceiling. This is a natural and necessary effect, without it temperatures on earth would be much lower than they are now and life as it is today would not be possible, but with the greenhouse effect the earth's average temperature is much more comfortable. The issue here is that these gases are being produced too much causing them to retain too much heat. Temperatures are rising and the following observations prove this. Over the last century research has shown that average land surface has rose from 0.45 to 0.6 oC. This is due to the increase of these gases and some of these gases occur naturally

Global Warming - is our weather getting worse? Is climate change taking place? What is Global Warming? Global warming refers to the increase in average ground temperatures on earth. A rise in the amount of "greenhouse gasses" has caused higher temperatures across the planet. Until recent investigation, the green house effect has simply been described as the process by which the atmosphere traps heat keeping the earth at a livable temperature. Although this trapping of heat is essential to our survival, it has begun to escalate to possibly dangerous levels. How does Global Warming Happen? The primary contributors to the greenhouse effect are greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses are vital to our survival. They serve as a sort of blanket to keep the heat in our atmosphere. Without the natural greenhouse effect the temperature of earth would be 15°C lower. But there can be a problem if we get too many greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. When heat enters the earth's atmosphere, it is in the form of short wave radiation. This is the radiation transmitted from the sun through space to us, and it passes easily through our clear atmosphere. As the short wave radiation warms the earth's surface, it is then re-radiated back out from the earth's surface, but now in the form of long wave radiation. The long wave radiation is much less

Juan Casares MUN 12 Gr. 9/18/2008 Issues of World Article 1 Articles: Global Warming (New York Times), North Pole ice cap melting faster than ever (AFP), Kyoto Protocol (UNFCCC), Global Warming: An overview, Polar Bear Extinct within 100 years Location: Global warming is an issue that affects the world as a whole but is more evident in the arctic zones because of the diminishing presence of ice. In Greenland, for example, the ice caps are receding at a meter per year. An Internet article, "North Pole ice cap melting faster than ever", discusses this phenomenon thoroughly. It states that every year since 1978, the summer in the North Pole has increasingly caused a recession in the ice caps. Glaciologist Mark Serreze says that "the North Pole itself could even become free of ice by September for the first time in modern history, setting a new milestone in the effects of global warming on the Arctic ice shelf." According to another article, Polar Bears Extinct within 100 years, global warming could cause the extinction of polar bears within a 100 year period. Icecaps in the North Pole are the Polar Bears' natural habitat, and the reduction of these icecaps simply reduces their habitat at exponential rates. Regardless of the melting poles, global warming affects the world in general because increases in temperature cause climatic changes. Thus, the presence of extreme

Global warming The phenomenon described as global warming has been well studied and documented by researchers throughout the world for several years. It is a phenomenon that has the potential to destroy our planet and all life on it. This essay will briefly define global warming, provide evidence of global warming, outline the main causes of global warming and discuss both the known and potential impacts of global warming on the planet earth. Comments are also made concerning actions being taken as well as others that need to be taken to protect our planet from the potential catastrophic consequences of continued global warming. For thousands of years the earth has gone through many changes in climate. In the last decade however, the earth has experienced notable increases in temperature, resulting in rising sea levels, changes in precipitation as well as other climate changes. The earth has not experienced such dramatic climate changes before in it's history as it has in the last one hundred years. Some of these climatic changes have been blamed on global warming. What is this phenomenon referred to as global warming? Global warming is the term used to describe a moderate increase in the earth's temperature as a result of human activities. Examples include, the burning of fossil fuels and the production of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which build up greenhouse gases

Global Warming

Global Warming Good Morning, Global warming, or climate change, is a subject that shows no sign of cooling down so I believe that if we all work together we can prevent global warming and the green house effect. You are all very intelligent enough to understand that if we don't react right now, the sea levels will start to rise, some plants and animals will face extinction and there will be a large scale of food and water shortage. Do you want to live in a world like this? The first cause of global warming is that the temperatures are rising. Over the last century, on the average the world's temperature has risen by approximately 0.6°C. And it is predicted that the global average temperatures will rise by 1.4°C and 5.8°C by 2100. This doesn't mean that the weather will be nice and nifty but, it means that the weather will be deadly and dangerous. Strong hurricanes, droughts, heat waves, wildfires, and other natural disasters have also taken part to climate change suggest some experts. The growth of deserts may also cause food shortages in many places. Also, that the warming of just 2°C to 3°C in the next 100 years would put 3 billion people at the risk from water shortage, an extra 300 million facing the threat of malaria and 100 million more in the danger of coastal flooding. Do you want to be surrounded by this much danger? The second cause of the occurrence of

Global Warming Timothy Kim Approximately 60 million people would be instantly homeless near Calcutta, India if either Greenland or West Antarctica melted, and at this very moment, they are melting in speed that was never this fast. Most, if not all, scientists believe that if we stop burning fossil fuels like petroleum, we can reverse the effect of this huge crisis. In my opinion, one of the world's most important necessities right now is to stop burning fossil fuels and use renewable energy such as wind or solar energy. Everyone must know what global warming is, how it is affecting each and every one of us and how to take care of this massive problem. Some big organizations such as Kyoto Protocol can reduce a huge amount of CO2 level but this problem can't be solved without everyone's contribution and you can reduce thousands of carbon dioxides by taking shorter showers, unplugging appliances, eating less meat and many other environmentally friendly things. Global warming is caused by the carbon dioxide getting trapped in our Earth's atmosphere, thickening it to prevent the heat from leaving the Earth. It is one of the world's most threatening facts to every human on Earth because it can cause a lot of damage that will affect every one of us. It is a proven fact not a theory and we need to take it more seriously. It is proven by the survey of 928 scientists and not even
