When asked what the most important aspect of their industry is, with regards to the success of their company, managers may well have different opinions. Some may identify customers at the forefront of their business, others may focus on staff within their organisation, whilst many may concentrate on keeping a watchful eye over their competitors. What is obvious, is that the management of people is an aspect of any business that must be mastered in order to reach their optimal performance. "The whole idea of the resourced based view of a firm inevitably accords a primacy to the role of people, who fundamentally, are the ultimate source of unique and hard-to-intimate capabilities" (Storey, http://www.bized.ac.uk/fme/3i.htm, 2003). Due to the obvious complication of people, in that every employee, customer, and competitor are different, a wide range of areas need to be considered and applied so that minimal conflicts arise. The most influential aspects of human resource management will be discussed in this assignment, namely motivation, communication, and the management of change within an organisation. Depending on the size of the company, these factors can be considered on a local, national, or international basis, involving not only tasks, i.e. actions leading towards the desired result, but also a variety of processes, which are not directly linked to outputs, but necessary along the way to reach the goal. This assignment will initially investigate the background of management, how it has developed throughout history, and attempt to demonstrate how effective human resource management can affect staff, showing the implications that will have on the overall performance of the organisation. It will improve staff development and give the business a greater understanding of customers needs as decisions will be made by those closer to the customers than the managers. By simply issuing instructions and messages one way, communication may appear to be faster and more acceptable to a manager of an entrepreneurial style business, but in reality, communication sent without the option of feedback, queries, or alternative solutions can be frustrating for staff and may lead to misunderstanding and inaccuracies. Two way communication may take longer due to misunderstandings being questioned for example, but the overall result will be more accurate, and the staff carrying out the request will be more inclined to complete it now they know exactly what is required, and that they have been encouraged to offer their opinion. There is a director within the Easyjet organisation who is responsible for people development and cultural issues. This is in addition to a human resources director. By allowing cabin crew to use the Easyjet website to post comments regarding the organisation for all employees to see, Easyjet demonstrate that they operate an open management style that is insistent on promoting communication between levels. Such comments may include aspects such as there being an insufficient difference between pay levels of cabin crew and purser; the demands of working on flights with rowdy, drunken customers on board; or the hostile response they can get from some pilots.( http://www.bized.ac.uk/compfact/easyjet/easy16.htm, 2003) Communication also covers the issues of social behaviour, knowledge sharing and feedback. When staff communicate, it does not always mean they are transferring information to do with their work, such as reporting results and suggestions, but aspects as simply as body language, direct and indirect can affect a organisations working environment immensely. However change is never good, according to Ratcliffe (2000) as anything that brings disruption, uncertainty, and fear cannot benefit the organisation. Biddle disagrees, so long as "people must understand the reasons for change and be able to see the benefit it will bring in order for them to have sufficient commitment for the change to be successful." (Biddle, 1980, p156). This again, highlights the need for effective communications as without it there will be little hope if change needs to occur within an organisation, and its overall performance will suffer. In conclusion it can be seen that discovering how human resource management can contribute to the overall performance of an organisation requires initially investigation into the definitions of various management styles, then furthermore into behavioural management techniques, as that is what human resource management is based upon. Motivation of staff was found to be an important subject, as by treating staff well, keeping them informed on business issues that they can relate to, and involving them where appropriate creates a workforce that is inspired and interested by the organisation, with a desire to contribute to its success. Effective communication within the business was also seen to be necessary for company activities to work at their highest efficiency. Shortening the hierarchical distance between management and staff, not necessarily structurally, but with regards to staff relationships was seen in practice to be beneficial, along with giving the workforce the opportunity to contribute their ideas produced results not only in improving communications, but also motivation. Finally the management of change was found to be important as no industry is static, and as developments within an organisation occur, managers need to deal with many issues that arise, including the consideration of altering their management style. With more and more organisations realising that behavioural management styles emphasising effective human resource management, staff are happier than ever in their workplace, and as a result, organisations overall performance is benefiting. ...read more.
