After watching the video we created a piece of role-play, in which we produced a non-naturalistic piece in response to the text. In our piece of drama we showed a man who was going to donate a kidney. This man had to choose which person he was going to donate to. The two women he had to choose from had very different personalities, one being nice and really caring, and the other being rude with the attitude that she deserved the kidney. It was non-naturalistic because in real life the donor would not have the choice. The national health would choose that for him just like in the Simon Armitage poem, the national health would pick and choose from his body with out him knowing. With this piece of drama we tried to get the audience to think about whether they would want to donate to the public, mot knowing who would have there organ and if they new that the person for example had done bad things in their life would it affect there decision on whether they would still want to donate.
When we first started to look at the scheme body snatchers it took me a while to understand the meaning of Simon Armitage’s poem, what he meant by things he had wrote. As we explored it further I understood and found it easier relate to what he was trying to say.
I’ve never really had any knowledge on how third world countries live so when we had to create still images and role play in the character of a third worldlier, I had to think carefully about how I was going to show my interpretation of it. This is because we live total different lives and our views on life are very different.
When we got to the part when the western doctor came to the village to take the healthiest member of each family away, we devised a piece of role-play to help us develop our understanding of what the characters would be thinking and feeling at this time and having to make a such a hard decision. If this situation was put on to my family, I don’t think we would be able to make a fair choice, because I no that I wouldn’t want any of my family members to go, they could be putting themselves in danger. I would nominate myself to go and I’m sure they would do the same.
In our piece of role-play my character was an old woman, she had lived in the village for years. She didn’t want any of the family to leave because she saw the family as being independent enough without help from outsiders. (Doctor) The woman had lived without the help for so many years and didn’t see what the western doctor could change to make things better because she is perfectly fine. She was being very stubborn, and I put myself as this character because I believe this is how a woman of her age would act if lived a perfectly fine life.
We moved on from the third world on to the western family the western family had been searching for a donor and when one was found we used hot seating to explore what the thoughts of the characters were. These characters were, the person receiving the organ, the mother of the donator. The sister of the receiver, and a person who is against organ donation all together.
I questions about how they were feeling about the situation, if the situation had been a life changing experience, and if any family members would donate.
The group read a newspaper article called “I sold my kidney to buy my home” it was the story of a women who had donated kidneys to receive money. This story linked with the “ A new life for Delise” video because the women sold their kidneys to make life better for there families, just as Delise’s mother donated her kidney to make there family life better life better.
To develop our ideas on this article further we used the explorative strategy, cross cutting. Cross cutting is when you cut from image to image cutting out the ones that aren’t necessary, and highlighting the good images by using them in your final performance, cross cutting to each one.
